POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 1, 2011) – The Vassar College women's volleyball team helped senior hitter
Amy Bavosa close out her home career in style, sweeping Kean University 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) Tuesday night at Kenyon Hall.
In a rescheduled Senior Day match due to Saturday's snowstorm, Bavosa had seven kills in her final home outing. The Brewers won the opening two sets comfortably, but found the Cougars inspired in the third set. Kean led the final set 10-6 and had the set tied 22-22 before the Brewers ran off the final three points for a victory that will send the team into Friday's Liberty League Championships with a boost of momentum..
The victory pushes Vassar to 17-12 on the season while Kean concludes its 2011 campaign at 11-21. Vassar will next travel to Clarkson and face the host Golden Knights in the opening match of the Liberty League Championship at 5:00 p.m. The Brewers are the No. 4 seed in the event that includes No. 2 Skidmore, No. 3 St. Lawrence and No. 1 Clarkson.
Freshman
Marie Pitre led Vassar with eight kills, with junior
Chloe McGuire and Bavosa each with seven. Junior setter
Hilary Koenigs had 27 set assists and Pitre had eight digs.
Kean was led by freshman Aysia Peterson with eight kills and freshman outside hitter Jennifer Espinal with seven. Freshman setter Alana Aranjo had 21 set assists and junior defensive specialist Samantha Sacco led all players with 11 digs.
Though swept in the match, Kean made the final set closely contested. The Cougars led 10-6 after a Vassar setting error, but back-to-back kills from Bavosa and freshman
Clara Cardillo put the Brewers ahead 14-12. From that point, Kean hung tough and following a kill by Peterson, had the match tied 22-22. A Kean attack error and kills from Koenigs and Pitre earned the Brewers a 25-22 third set win to take the match.
The second set saw several early ties, the last coming at 11-11 following a kill down the seam by Peterson. From that point, the Brewers inched ahead 15-11 following three straight Kean miscues. A Vassar attack error brought the Cougars within 17-15, but that was the closest the visitors would come. The Brewers reeled off five straight points, punctuated by a service ace by Koenigs for a 22-15 lead. Back-to-back kills by Peterson drew Kean within 24-20, and made the final moments interesting, but Vassar closed out the set on a Kean service error. The Cougars improved their hitting percentage to .286 from the opening set, while the Brewers dipped to .300.
In the opening set, the Brewers trailed briefly, 2-0, and then took complete control, racing out to an 18-7 lead on the strength of a kill from Bavosa. The Brewers maintained a double digit lead the entire set, and pushed ahead 22-12 en route to the 25-15 win. In a set that saw Vassar hit .318 (11-4-22), Bavosa led the way with four kills. Kean made only three attack errors on 21 attempts (8-3-21) and hit .238 in the opening set. .
