HOBOKEN, NJ (October 5, 2011) – A combination of youth and experience helped lead the Vassar College women's volleyball team to an impressive 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-20) sweep over Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening at Canavan Arena.
In notching their second win over the Ducks this season, the Brewers got an 11 kill performance from freshman
Marie Pitre, seven kills from fellow freshman
Taylor Mosley and 10 kills from senior
Amy Bavosa. On 37 combined attempts, Bavosa and Pitre made only seven attack errors, with Pitre hitting a stunning .600 for the match. In the decisive third set, Vassar had its best attack outing, hitting .370 (15-5-37).
Now 11-8 on the season, the Brewers will face Bryn Mawr in opening round play of the Seven Sisters Championships hosted by Wellesley (MA) College on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. Vassarnext meets Smith at 3:00 p.m. with play continuing on Sunday against Mount Holyoke and Wellesley. Stevens drops to 11-14 and will face Plymouth State at the Springfield College Tournament on Friday.
The Brewers set the tone for the match by jumping out to a 23-11 lead in the first set. Due in large part to five kills coming from Bavosa and four from Mosley the Brewers never trailed in the set. Vassar capitalized on a .160 hitting set by the Ducks. With junior setter
Hilary Koenigs serving, the Brewers broke the match wide open by winning six straight points for a 14-5 lead and cruised to a 25-16 victory.
In the second set Stevens jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead. The match was tied at 7-7, 8-8, 11-11 and the last time at 15-15 before Vassar took control. The Brewers won seven of the next nine points for a 22-17 lead, the last point coming off an important kill by junior
Brittany Stopa. The Ducks rallied to come within 22-20 following a Vassar attack error, but a kill by junior
Cebe Loomis, a service ace by sophomore
Aoife Feighery and a Stevens attack error provided Vasasr with a 25-20 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final set, Vassar's best statistically, a kill by Pitre pushed the Brewers ahead 13-7, and in much the same fashion as the second set, Vassar was able to keep Stevens at bay with strong defense and timely offense. Stevens did close within 19-17, but another kill by Loomis and two straight Stevens miscues put Vassar ahead 22-17. Pitre had kills on Vassar's 24th and 25th points for the 25-20 win.
Aside from the attack prowess of Bavosa, Mosley and Pitre, Koenigs contributed 32 set assists. Feighery, who was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week on Monday, had 11 digs, as did Mosley.
Stevens which hit just .131 for the match, got eight kill outings from junior Maggie Kowalska and sophomore Chrissy Dickinson. Sophomore Samantha Gates had 15 set assists.
