SCHENECTADY, NY (October 26, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's soccer team clinched the fourth seed in the Liberty League playoffs with a 3-0 road win over Union College on Wednesday night.

The Brewers (9-5-2, 3-3-1 Liberty) are in sole possession of fourth place in the Liberty League with 10 points and finish the regular season with a home game against Bard College on Saturday, October 29, at 12:00 p.m. at Gordon Field. The program will honor its four seniors on Saturday in the final regular season game. Vassar faces the national No. 1 and top-seeded St. Lawrence University on Wednesday, November 2, at a time to be determined. The Dutchmen (11-4-1, 2-4-1 Liberty) are eliminated from playoff contention and host Skidmore on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

“We got a couple of quick breaks early, capitalized on them, and held on for the win,” said head coach Andy Jennings. “It was a great team performance; a lot of hard work went into it and I'm happy for the guys.”

Vassar seniors Ross Macklin and Sam Erlichson McCarthy scored first-half goals to give the Brewers an early lead and sophomore Juliano Pereira iced the game with a goal in the 81st minute. Vassar's Ryan Grimme made six saves to shut out the league's top-ranked offense, Vassar's sixth clean sheet of the season.

Vassar struck first in the 7th minute with a header by Erlichson McCarthy on a throw in by junior Zander Mrlik for a 1-0 lead.

Macklin scored his eighth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 26th minute to extend the lead to 2-0.

Pereira had the game's final tally with a header off a corner kick by senior Harrison Freund.

Union was ranked No. 18 nationally in last week's NSCAA poll but dropped out of this week's rankings with a 1-0 loss to No. 11 Hobart last weekend.
