CANTON, NY (October 1, 2011) – After playing a pair of five-set matches on Friday night, the Vassar College women's volleyball team repeated the same action on Saturday, splitting a pair of Liberty League five-setters against Union College and St. Lawrence. The Brewers defeated Union and fell to St. Lawrence.
In Saturday's morning match, Vassar outlasted Union, 19-25, 25-20, 17-25, 25-23, 15-8, and were edged by host St. Lawrence, 25-23, 25-22, 10-25, 22-25, 14-16.
After a weekend of Liberty League play, the Brewers, 10-8, 4-4, will step out of league play, next heading to Stevens Institute of Technology for a 7:00 p.m. match on Wednesday, October 5.
The Brewers came from behind to defeat Union. Vassar trailed 23-18 in the fourth set, but reeled off seven straight points to force the deciding fifth set, a 15-8 victory.
Four Brewers reached double figures in kills, led by junior hitter
Chloe McGuire who had 21 kills. Freshman
Marie Pitre had 12 kills and both senior
Amy Bavosa and sophomore
Jessie Ditmore had 11 kills. Ditmore made only one attack error on 23 attempts. Junior setter
Hilary Koenigs had 43 of Vassar's 46 set assists. Defensively, the Brewers had 103 digs, with five players reaching double figures, led by 18 from Bavosa and sophomore
Aoife Feighery, 17 from Ditmore and 14 from Pitre.
For the second time this season, Vassar and St. Lawrence went to five sets, with the Saints edging the Brewers 16-14 to win the match.
Vassar jumped ahead of the Saints by winning the first two sets. St. Lawrence took an early 5-4 advantage in the third set and then went on an impressive 20-6 run, winning the third set 25-10. With a 25-10 victory in the fourth set, the match was even at 2-2.
The fifth set thriller saw both teams working point-for-point until the Saints jumped to a 14-10 lead. Vassar was able to tie the score 14-14, but the Saints got consecutive points for the narrow win.
With a season-high 107 digs, the Brewers fought tenaciously throughout the match, led by a phenomenal 42-dig performance from Feighery. Pitre added 17 digs and Bavosa 15.
The attack game was consistent with Bavosa notching 16 kills and McGuire 12. Koenigs had 32 set assists.
