POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 25, 2011) – Senior hitter Evan Fredericksen connected on 18 kills and hit .412 to lead the Vassar College men's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-17) win over Bard College in the home opener Tuesday night at Kenyon Hall.

Fredericksen made only four attack errors in 34 attempts and contributed five digs in helping the Brewers even the season record at 2-2. Vassar remains home on Thursday, January 27 against Hunter College. Bard College falls to 3-3 on the season and travels to Lehman College on January 29 for a 2:00 p.m. match.

Fredericksen was the offensive force for the Brewers, but he got additional support from sophomore Matthew Elgin with seven kills, junior Lucas Rathjens with five kills and sophomore Charles Caldwell with five kills on seven attempts with just one error. Sophomore John Konow distributed 33 set assists and the defense was anchored by sophomore Christian La Du with 14 digs.

Bard got a 13 kill outing from junior Nick Chan. Freshman setter Henry Kasiske had 31 assists and junior libero Andre Cortrite had 12 digs.

The first set was evenly played, with five ties until the Brewers broke free from an 18-18 tie. With Elgin serving, Vassar won four straight points for a 22-18 lead and won the set 25-20 with three kills all coming from Fredericksen.

Vassar broke out to an 8-1 lead in the second set and pushed that margin to 20-10 following a Fredericksen kill. Bard made a late push, however, all with freshman Billy Williams serving. The Raptors won five straight points and capitalized on a Vassar serving error to draw within 22-18. The final stages of the set see-sawed back and forth, and Bard closed within 24-23. Following a timeout, a kill by Konow off a Kasiske serve enabled the Brewers to hang on 25-23.

The third and final set saw the Brewers race out to a quick 7-1 lead, build that margin to 20-10 after a Bard attack error and capitalize on a Bard attack error to ease into a 25-17 victory. In the final set, Bard connected on only eight kills while making six attack errors. The Brewers were more efficient, earning 16 kills with only five hitting errors.
