Bavosa Named All-Tournament as Brewers Split Matches at Union Invitational

Bavosa averaged 3.15 kills per set in the four matches played at Union.

SCHENECTADY, NY (September 18, 2010) – Led by junior Amy Bavosa, who was named to the All-Tournament team following four matches in which she averaged 3.15 kills per set, the Vassar College women's volleyball team split its two Saturday matches, losing to Cortland 3-1 (17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 17-25) and defeating Hartwick 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-14), to finish 3-1 in the two-day event.

The Brewers, now 6-5 on the season, will next play at the MIT Invitational on September 24-25. On Friday, Vassar will face Smith at 6:00 p.m. and Tufts at 8:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at Tufts.

Bavosa, who was named All-Tournament at the Cortland Invitational earlier this season, had 41 total kills with only 10 attack errors on 101 attempts and a .307 hitting percentage. She added 15 digs (1.5 per set) to her performance.

In the fourth match of the Union Invitational, the Brewers swept past Hartwick, 3-0. Led by freshman Jessie Ditmore who tallied a career-matching nine kills and a career-high 22 attempts, the Brewers broke out to a solid start in the first set with a .306 hitting percentage and had a balanced offense with Bavosa collecting seven kills, senior Julianna Simon adding six kills and sophomore Cebe Loomis with five. Sophomore Hilary Koenigs had 28 set assists in distributing the ball to seven different Brewers. Defensively, the Brewers had one of their best 3-set match performances with 34 digs. Senior Chelsea Mottern had eight digs and Bavosa notched seven.

In the opening match of the day, sophomore Chloe McGuire registered 52 attack attempts, the third most of her career, but the Brewers lost a tough four set match to Cortland. McGuire tied a season-high with 15 kills in the match. Bavosa was steady with eight kills and Simon added six. Koenigs had a strong outing with 34 set assists and Mottern had 16 of Vassar's 43 digs.
