POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 15, 2010) -- The Vassar College Men's soccer team poured on the offense early and often Wednesday afternoon, scoring four first-half goals and firing 36 total shots in a 5-0 win over Bard College at Gordon Field.
The Brewers improve to 4-2 with the win, and will have their last non-conference tune-up at Drew University Sunday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. before league play begins. The Raptors drop to 2-4 on the season and will host Farmingdale State College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
The Brewers peppered 20 shots in the first half, nine on goal, compared to just two (none on goal) for the Raptors.
Junior midfielder
Ross Macklin nearly scored the first goal of the game twelve minutes in when he blasted a shot off the left post, but neither his shot nor
Sam Erlichson McCarthy's rebound were converted. Two minutes later, Macklin got his revenge, heading a cross from Erlichson McCarthy off that same post and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Macklin and Erlichson-McCarthy each had a hand in the next Brewer goal as well. In the 21st minute, Macklin knocked a corner-kick into the Bard six-yard box. Freshman
Evan Seltzer flicked the ball backwards with his heel to an oncoming Erlichson-McCarthy, who pounded it into the net, giving Bard goalkeeper Devin Connelly no chance at a save.
Vassar scored its third goal when Erlichson-McCarthy headed a
Zander Mrlik cross to the back post, where junior forward
Eli London was waiting to finish it off. Fellow junior forward
Harrison Freund got in on the act three minutes before the end of the first half, taking a pass from freshman
Adam McCabe and weaving through several Bard defenders inside the box before sliding and curling a left-footed shot into the net to make it 4-0 at halftime.
Erlichson McCarthy had six shots, one goal and one assist in the first half, and Seltzer had four shots and one assist.
The Brewers added one goal in the second half on a beautiful string of passes. Seltzer lofted a short chip over the Bard defense to Macklin, who passed on his own scoring opportunity to find
Bryan English waiting back post for the easy goal, his first of the season.
Bard mustered just four shots in the game, one on goal. Devin Connelly made nine saves for the Raptors.
Gary Clauss started in goal for Vassar and played 29 minutes for his third win of the year (3-0) before
Alex Egan, seeing his first minutes of the season, took over for the rest of the game.
