HYANNIS, MA (April 9, 2010) – The Vassar College men's volleyball team was upset in the opening round of the North East Conference Volleyball Association (NECVA) Championships by D'Youville College, 3-1 (30-19, 28-30, 26-30, 28-30) on Friday afternoon. The No. 3 seeded Brewers conclude the 2010 season with an 18-9 record. D'Youville, the No. 14 seed, improves to 18-13 and advances to play the winner of an evening match between MIT and Newbury.
In a match where neither team was able to hit better than .200, the Spartans capitalized on a .183 attack percentage by the Brewers. After winning the first set decidedly, 30-19, the Brewers lost the fourth set 30-28, relinquishing the last two points on a pair of attack errors. The Brewers led in the final set 23-20 following a kill by senior hitter
Phil Tully, but D'Youville was able to tie the match at 23-23, then ultimately take a 26-24 lead, only to have the set tied at 27-27 and 28-28 before two miscues ended Vassar's season.
The Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 match lead following an impressive 30-19 first set victory. A kill by Tully provided Vassar with a 16-10 lead and the margin increased to 24-15 following a D'Youville attack error. Tully had eight of his team-high 20 kills in this set and hit an impressive .385.
The Brewers couldn't carry that momentum through the next three sets, however. Vassar hit .125 in the second set, .188 in the third set and .167 in the fourth set. The Spartans were better in sets two and three, with .237 attack percentages in both.
The second set saw Vassar take a 17-13 lead and hold a margin until D'Youville was able to tie the set at 21-21. Ahead 27-25, the Brewers committed three straight errors, two attack and one serving, enabling the Spartans to take a 28-27 lead and ultimately win the set off a Vassar attack error, 30-28. Junior hitter
Evan Fredericksen led Vassar with five kills.
The Brewers never led in the third set. Vassar fell behind 7-2 and came no closer than 14-14 following a D'Youville service error. Fredericksen once again led Vassar with five kills, supporting his 18 kills for the match.
The fourth set was tied seven times, erasing a 20-17 lead Vassar had developed. Tully did his best to force a fifth set with six kills in the set, but the Brewers couldn't overcome nine attack errors and five costly serving errors.
Tully finished his illustrious Vassar career with 20 kills and Fredericksen had 18. Freshman Matthew Elgin had eight kills and a .368 attack percentage. Freshman
John Konow had 47 of Vassar's 52 set assists and fellow freshman
Christian La Du had 22 digs.
