POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 30, 2010) -- After just over eight minutes of play, junior midfielder
Sarah Warner scored her second goal of the game and her 54th of the season to set a new single-season scoring record for the Vassar College women's lacrosse team. The Brewers never looked back, as they went on to beat Univeristy of Rocheseter, 15-7, in Liberty League action under beautiful conditions Friday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
The Brewers finish their season at 8-8, 2-6 in the Liberty League, while the Yellowjackets fall to 2-13, 1-6 in the league and will conclude their season tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
Warner's record-breaking goal comes following her first career ECAC honor, as she was named ECAC Division III Upstate Offensive Performer of the Week this past Tuesday. To earn her record-setting goal, Warner eluded her defender to the left and blasted a shot past Rochester goalkeeper Frances Cooley high into the net. The goal came in the middle of six straight Vassar goals after Rochester had opened the game with a goal from freshman Liza Maizel just 48 seconds into play.
With Vassar leading 6-1, Rochester was finally able to break up the Vassar run with a free position goal by senior Amanda Case with just over eleven minutes left in the first period. Case scored two more goals before the half ended to cut the Vassar lead to 9-4 at halftime. The Brewers received goals from six different players in the first 30 minutes, including seniors
Larisa Lasko and
Liz Pacheco as well as Warner, Morgan, junior
Moe Byrne and sophomore
Elizabeth Feltch.
The Yellowjackets came out strong to start the second period, as Case and fellow senior Danielle Mondro both notched goals in the opening minutes of the half to make the score 9-6. Vassar responded with two goals from Warner as well as a goal from junior classmate
Allie Morgan to give the Brewers a 12-6 lead.
In her final game in a Vassar uniform, Pacheco notched a goal and two assists to go along with a game-high seven groundballs and three caused turnovers. Warner finished up her breakout season with five goals and seven groundballs to go along with four caused turnovers. She finished her junior season with a new single season school record 57 goals. Byrne scored four goals for the Brewers while Morgan scored three and Lasko and Feltch each notched one as well.
For the Yellowjackets, Case had four goals and an assist while Mondrom, Maizel, and sophomore Niki Holmes each scored once.
The Brewers outshot the Yellowjackets 32-16 and gathered 36 groundballs, 12 more than Rochester. The Brewers also held the advantage in draw controls, 17-7. In goal, junior
Nicole Engelhardt had two saves for the Brewers while Cooley had eleven for the Yellowjackets.
Before the game started, the Brewers honored their six graduating seniors: Pacheco, Lasko,
Lindsay Naple,
Jennie McAllister,
Jenn Richards, and
Lindsay Magida.
