POUGHKEEPSIE, NEW YORK (March 26, 2010) – The Vassar men's volleyball team secured its hold on the top spot in the NECVA Metro division with a convincing 3-0 (30-16, 30-26, 30-26) win over the College of Mount St. Vincent Friday night at Kenyon Hall. Senior All-American hitter
Phil Tully, who is ranked 5th in the nation for kills per game, led all players with 15 kills on .448 hitting in his final home game for the Brewers.
Vassar, ranked 5th in the nation in the AVCA poll, improves to 17-7 overall and a perfect 9-0 in conference play. They close out their season with away games against two of their toughest opponents: No. 1 Springfield College on Wednesday, March 31 and No. 4 Baruch College on April 1. The College of Mount St. Vincent ends their regular season at 14-16 and 4-5 in the NECVA Metro.
The Brewers, who have won eleven of twelve matches since February 17, were dominant from the first set—they jumped out to an early 7-2 lead thanks to strong hitting by Tully and
Evan Fredericksen and the Dolphins couldn't close the gap. Vassar out-hit Mount St. Vincent .370 to .071 in the first set.
The Brewers would not prove so dominant in the second and third sets, and the Dolphins were able to narrow the difference significantly. In the second set, the two squads were tied at 14-14 before Vassar pulled away, and they came back in the third from down 22-13 to get within three, at 25-22. Junior David Guerrero was a force at the net for the visitors, finishing with a team-high 10 kills. Matt Krauszer followed with 9 of his own.
For Vassar, Fredericksen tallied 11 kills on .500 hitting. Freshman setter
John Konow had 21 assists, and
Clifford Quinn added 14.
