WEST PALM BEACH, FL (March 10, 2010) – After spotting Drew University an early 2-0 lead, the Vassar College women's lacrosse team poured on the offense, and after losing the season opener 14-13 against Bridgewater State on Monday, reversed that score and saw six different players tally goals in a 14-13 victory over the Rangers on Wednesday morning in the second of three Spring Fling games.
The Brewers even the season record at 1-1 and will play Simmons College on March 11 at 4:00 p.m. Drew drops to 2-1 and returns to action on March 17 hosting Haverford at 4:00 p.m.
For the second straight game, junior attack
Sarah Warner was the offensive star for Vassar, netting four goals in the game, including the Brewers' 14th with 1:31 to play in the contest.
Down 2-0 four minutes into the game, the Brewers made a valiant effort to get back into the game, and only trailed 6-5 at intermission following two goals from junior attack
Allie Morgan, and one each by sophomore midfielder
Elizabeth Feltch, senior attack Larissa Lasko and junior attack
Moe Byrne.
The game was evenly played for the five minutes of the second half and was tied at 7-7 following Byrne's second goal, a free position shot. After Drew edged ahead 8-7 on a goal by senior attack Samantha Silver, Warner scored three straight goals – two of which were unassisted – in a span of three minutes to push the Brewers ahead 10-8.
The Rangers were able to tie the game at 12-12 after consecutive goals off free position shots by junior midfielder Stacie Brown, the last tally coming with 7:40 to play. The Brewers responded with two big goals by Feltch at the 5:41 mark and Warner with 1:56 to play for a 14-12 Vassar lead, one that held despite Drew's Brown notching her fourth goal of the game with 1:31 to play.
The game was evenly played, indicative by the closeness of statistics. Drew outshot Vassar 28-26, but the Brewers held an 18-14 advantage in groundballs and had two more turnovers than Drew, 17-15.
Warner's four goal game was her second straight, followed by Morgan and Feltch with three each. Junior goalie
Nicole Engelhardt made 12 saves. "Nicole really had a great game today," said head coach
Judy Finerghty. "I could say that about our entire team. Coming off a tough loss to Bridgewater State on Monday, we really hung together and pulled off a good win today."
Brown had four goals for Drew and junior midfielder Sloane Coles had three. Drew junior goalie Rachel Hanley made 9 saves.
