Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 27, 2010) – In a matchup of the two top teams in the North East Collegiate Volleyball Association (NECVA) Metro Division, the No. 9 Vassar College men's volleyball team emerged with a 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 22-30, 30-27) victory over No. 15 Ramapo College, extending its winning streak to seven matches. Senior Phil Tully had 25 kills, including seven in each of the last three sets, helping the Brewers stifle a Ramapo comeback attempt.

Vassar improves to 13-6, 5-0 in the NECVA Metro. Ramapo drops to 12-6, 4-1 in the Metro. After dropping three consecutive matches in the Nazareth Tournament two weeks ago, the Brewers have won seven straight, dropping just four total sets in those seven matches. Vassar will host SUNY New Paltz on March 2nd at 7:00 pm, and Ramapo plays next against Sage College at 7:00 pm.

Junior Evan Fredericksen and freshman Matthew Elgin had 15 kills apiece and Elgin hit an impressive .500, but Tully's 25 kills were the highlight, punctuated the match-ending kill. The senior co-captain hit .346 on the day, and also assisted on three blocks.

In the first set, Vassar took advantage of several Ramapo errors to sneak out to a 16-10 lead, but the Roadrunners put together a 4-0 run of their own to cut the lead to 16-14. An Elgin kill gave the Brewers a bit of breathing room at 17-14, and despite Ramapo trimming the Vassar lead to one point on six different occasions, Vassar held on and won, 30-26.

The Brewers hit a scorching .486 in the second set, riding seven kills and a .500 hitting percentage from Tully and six kills and a .750 hitting percentage from Frederickson. Those numbers were not enough to build much of a lead, however. The set was tied 14 different times, and Ramapo got within one point at 28-27, but Vassar scored the last two points and took the set 30-27.

With Vassar up 5-1 in the third set and looking to complete the sweep, it was Ramapo that regained the momentum. The Roadrunners tied the game at six, and battled Vassar point for point until they opened up a 24-22 lead. From that point, Ramapo scored the next six points to take the third set 30-22.

In the fourth and final set, Tully took over. His seven kills came in an efficient 12 attack attempts for a .500 hitting percentage, and he hammered home three of Vassar's last five points. Playing from behind for much of the set, Ramapo came back to tie the game at 26, but a thunderous kill by Tully made it 27-26 and gave Vassar a lead it would not relinquish.

Ramapo had four players with four-plus kills, and were led by Matt Scott's 59 assists and 13 digs. The Roadrunners hit .256 and had 28 attack errors, while the Brewers hit at a .318 clip and had just 19 errors.

Freshman John Konow led Vassar with 61 assists. Last week's Metro Division Rookie of the Week freshman Christian La Du, Tully, and Fredericksen all had double-digit digs, and Elgin assisted on four blocks.
