SUNY New Paltz Box Score

Rivier Box Score

ROCHESTER, NY (February 13, 2010) – Despite the performance of senior All-American Phil Tully, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, the Vassar College men's volleyball team dropped both of their matches at the Nazareth Tournament Saturday afternoon. The Brewers lost their opening match to SUNY New Paltz 3-0 (25, 30-28, 24-30) and then fell in the fifth place match to Rivier College 3-1 (26-30, 30-27, 23-30, 28-30). Tully had 60 kills in the four matches, including 31 in Saturday's action.

The Brewers, now 6-6 on the season, will host the Vassar Invitational next Friday and Saturday at Walker Field House. Vassar faces Philadelphia Biblical at 4:00 p.m. and Johnson & Wales at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.

Rivier improved its record to 13-3 with a 3-1 victory over Vassar in the third place match. Attack errors plagued the Brewers in the first and third sets. In a carryover from the New Paltz match, Vassar hit just .172. The Brewers were led by 16 kills from junior Evan Fredericksen and 15 from Tully. Freshman John Konow had all of Vassar's 42 set assists and fellow freshman Christian La Du had a nine dig match. Behind that group, Vassar won the third set in a tightly, 30-27, and was within striking distance in a 30-28 loss in the fourth in final set.

Rivier got a 22 kill performance from Jared Andreozzi, who committed just four errors on 30 attempts for a .600 attack performance. As a team, Rivier's .253 attack percentage was enough to earn the win. Three other Rivier players had double figures in kills. The architect of a 71 kill match was Zach Hansen who had 56 set assits.

In Saturday's first match, the Brewers faced a hot SUNY New Paltz team that faced UC Santa Cruz for the Nazareth Tournament Championship. Vassar defeated the Hawks 3-2 on January 27, but this match was different. SUNY New Paltz opened the match hitting .412 while Vassar hit .250. The Hawks, behind the effort of four players who each had double figures in kills hit .357 for the match compared to the .276 for the Brewers. That statistic off set a strong blocking match for Vassar, which had seven total team blocks.

Tully had 16 hills for Vassar and Fredericksen had 10 kills on 18 attempts with only three errors for a solid .389 attack match. In the deciding third set, New Paltz hit .357 and Vassar dipped to .194. Konow had 36 set assists and fellow freshman La Du had 10 digs to lead Vassar.

New Paltz was led by Jake Moore with 16 kills and a .367 hitting percentage. Daniel Liberto had 11 kills to support Moore.
