POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 20, 2010) -- Against its second New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) opponent in three days, the Vassar College women's soccer team had difficulty finishing on offense and conceded two goals in the final 10 minutes of play for a 2-1 loss to Montclair State University Wednesday evening at Gordon Field.
Although this loss does not harm the Brewers league standings, they are winless in their previous four games. The Brewers (9-5-1, 3-2 Liberty) are tied with Union in fourth place of the Liberty League and control their playoff destiny as their final league games come at home this Saturday against third place Skidmore (3-1 Liberty) at 3:00 p.m. and this Sunday against Union (3-2 Liberty) at 1:00 p.m. The Brewers will celebrate their Senior Day on Sunday. The Red Hawks (6-7-3, 2-4-1 NJAC) host Richard Stockton this Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
In the 89th minute, Montclair State sophomore forward Rachel Senyszyn crossed a seemingly harmless ball into the box with no teammates aorund. Vassar's failed clear attempt went right to junior Christina DeMartinis who immediately ripped a shot into the upper left corner for the game-winning goal at the 88:47 mark.
The Brewers outshot the Red Hawks 19-12 (10-2 in the first half) and had more scoring opportunities in the contest with several near misses. Vassar finally converted in the 67th minute as sophomore
Keiko Kurita beat a defender to a loose ball and then threaded a pass to senior captain
Carolyn Demougeot who turned and blasted a shot into the upper right corner from the edge of the box for her 28th career goal.
Undeterred, the Red Hawks chipped away at the lead and put together a fine series of passes equalizer goal in the 83rd minute. Senior midfielder Jackie McGrath approached the Brewer defense on the left side of the box and dished wide to Senyszyn on her left who took a few dribbles and cut a pass backward. Trailing and wide open, senior captain Katie Minervini timed her run up to the ball and struck a shot of the crossbar in the center of the goal and in to tie the game at 1-1.
Demougeot leads the Brewers with 10 goals for 23 points. She is fourth in program history with 28 career goals. With her team-leading seventh assist, Kurita tied the 5th best single season assist mark in program history. Kurita is one assist away from tying Karen Murray '96 and Diana Stanich '91for the third best single-season mark.
Sophomore Marisa Zayac picks up the win with eight saves and improves to 6-7-3. Sophomore
Lexi Hutton made six saves and is 7-4-1 this season.
