Women's Volleyball Sweeps Hudson Valley Tri-Match Over Mt. St. Mary & Bard

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 16, 2010) -- The Vassar College women's volleyball team swept both of its matches at the Hudson Valley Tri-Match, defeating Mount St. Mary in the opening match 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-19) and 3-0 over Bard (25-5, 25-9, 25-17) in the second match at Kenyon Hall on Saturday afternoon.

Now 12-10 on the season, Vassar will next play on Friday, October 22 at the WestConn Tournament, facing host Western Connecticut in the opening match at 5:00 p.m.

Against Mount St. Mary, the Brewers won the first set by a narrow 25-22 margin, but never surrendered the lead after starting off down 1-0. Thanks to offense by junior Amy Bavosa and Mount St. Mary miscues, Vassar pulled ahead 11-4 with a six-point run.The Brewers maintained a steady four or five point buffer through the set until 23-18, when the Knights took advantage of a few Vassar errors for a four-point run to pull within one point at 23-22. Freshman Rose Carman closed out the set with a service winner.

The Brewers cruised for a 25-17 win in the second set behind an 11-2 run at 10-9 to jump out to a 21-11 lead. Vassar chased the lead early in the third set but evened the score at 14-14 and sparked a 10-3 run before winning 25-19. Bavosa led Vassar with 10 kills and Carman had seven kills. Senior Chelsea Mottern had 22 digs. Sophomore Hilary Keonigs had 27 set assists.

In the final match against Bard, the Brewers got production across the board against the Raptors, jumping out to a commanding 13-0 lead and increasing that margin to 18-3 following a kill by senior Julianna Simon. Kills from sophomore Brittany Stopia and Carman helped Vassar earn the 25-5 win.

Vassar jumped out to another commanding lead at 11-3. Bard scored three straight points to get within 11-6, but Vassar scored the next five points for a 16-6 lead. A kill by sophomore Cebe Loomis put Vassar ahead 17-7 and the Brewers maintained a double figures margin for the 25-9 victory. In the third set, the most competitive of the three, Vassar jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead. Bard closed the gap at 7-5, 10-7 and 13-10, but the Brewers would win three straight points for a 16-10 lead. A kill from Bavosa put Vassar up 18-11 and the teams exchanged points before the Brewers closed out the match 25-17.

Bavosa had nine kills and Loomis added six kills against Bard. Koenigs had 23 set assists and Mottern chipped in with 12 digs.

Against Vassar, Bard got 21 sets assists from Jess Philphott and Freggy Hernandez had 11 digs against the Brewers.

In the middle match of the tri-match, Mount St. Mary defeated Bard 3-1 (25-8, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16). Bard was led by Rachel Van Horn with 11 kills and Hernandez with 16 digs.
