NEW PALTZ, NY (October 13, 2010) – After getting off to a slow start in the opening two sets, the Vassar College women's volleyball team rebounded with a stronger performance in the third set, but that momentum wasn't enough to propel the Brewers past SUNY New Paltz on Wednesday evening. Vassar dropped a 3-0 decision (15-25, 15-25, 21-25) to the Hawks.
The loss drops Vassar to 10-10 on the season. The Brewers will host Mount St. Mary and Bard in a tri-match at Kenyon Hall on Saturday, October 16 at 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. New Patlz, which defeated Vassar 3-1 in the fourth match of the season at the Cortland Invitational, improves to 19-6. The Hawks participate in the Wellesley Invite on Friday, October 15 against Ithaca at 7:00 p.m.
The Brewers were led by junior
Amy Bavosa with eight kills and freshmen
Rose Carman and
Jessie Ditmore with five kills each. Sophomore
Hilary Koenigs had 17 assists and senior
Chelsea Mottern had 15 digs.
New Paltz placed two players in double figures in kills with Kelly Lavender earning 14 and Dana Kindelmann with 10. Marissa King had 25 set assists and 11 digs. Carrie Hack led all players with 19 digs.
In the first two sets, the Hawks set the tone, capitalizing on an off-attack performance by the Brewers who had 23 attack errors on 26 kills. New Paltz was able to maintain five-to-seven point leads throughout each set en route to a pair of 25-15 wins.
The third set was tighter and more competitive as the Brewers began to find their flow. Vassar had the match tied at 6-6 and 10-10. When the Hawks surged ahead 14-11, Vassar was able to tie the match at 14-14 following a kill by Ditmore. Vassar then tied the set at 17-17 off an ace by sophomore
Christina Verdirame and 18-18 off another kill by Ditmore. The Hawks edged ahead 20-19, but a kill from senior
Julianna Simon brought the Brewers within 20-19 and a big kill from Bavosa had Vassar within 21-20. In a tightly contested set, a kill from Verdirame made the score 22-21, but New Paltz got kills from Michelle Jacobson, Mellinda GiGiovanni and a Vassar miscue to win the set 25-23.
The Brewers got off to a slow start in the second set, falling behind 12-4 and never could muster enough offensive to slice into the New Paltz lead. The Hawks, much like the first set, held a comfortable five to six point lead throughout the set, ultimately turning a 20-14 lead into a 25-15 win.
In the opening set, the Brewers never led and were only within one point of the Hawks at 6-5 before playing catch-up the rest of the set. New Paltz maintained a six-point advantage throughtout. With the score 19-13, the Hawks scored six of the final eight points for a 25-15 victory.
