NEW YORK, NY (January 30, 2010) – In what head coach
Antonia Sweet called a “workmanlike” performance, the Vassar College men's volleyball team improved its record to 3-1 and won its opening match in NECVA Metro Division play with a 30-5, 30-14, 30-9 victory over Polytechnic University Saturday afternoon.
The Brewers, ranked No. 9 in the AVCA Top-15 Coaches Poll, will return home to face No. 7 nationally ranked New York University on Tuesday, February 2 at 7:00 p.m.
In the sweeping victory, the Brewers were led by freshman Matthew Elgin, the reigning NEVCA Conference Rookie of the Week. Elgin had 10 kills on 13 attempts with a single error. He also contributed two block solos and five block assists. Senior AVCA All-America
Phil Tully had seven kills on eight swings without an error, to lead the Vassar offense.
Sophomore
Clifford Quinn had 19 set assists and freshman
Patrick Donohue had six digs on the defensive side.
In his first significant playing match of his young career, freshman Charles Caldwell had three service aces and two block assists.
Everyone on the Vassar team saw action.
