Women's Volleyball Improves to 6-0 Win Victories At Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, NY (September 18, 2009) – For the Vassar women's volleyball team, it has been six matches played and six victories. On Friday afternoon, the Brewers opened play at the Union Invitational, and didn't drop a set in defeating Sage College 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-18) and Oswego State (25-6, 25-17, 25-21). 

Though the season has been impressive thus far, Saturday's competition figures to present a test for the Brewers, as both Liberty League rivals Skidmore and Union won their early matches on Friday and at will both play Vassar on Saturday. The Brewers will meet Skidmore at noon and Union at 2:00 p.m. Results of those matches will be available on the Union College Tournament Web site. 

In the opening match against Sage College, the second time Vassar has played the Gators in the last nine days, the Brewers started sluggishly but picked up rhythm quickly for the straight set victory. For the third straight match, Vassar was led by the freshman pair of Chloe McGuire and Hilary Koenigs. McGuire recorded 11 kills – her third straight match in double figures – and hit an impressive .476. She made just one attack error on 21 attempts. McGuire had an all-purpose match, adding nine digs and two block assists.

At setter, Koenigs had her third straight 30-plus assist match, contributing 33 assists for the Brewers who had 39 kills for the match. Sophomore Amy Bavosa had 10 kills as her game rounds into form. Junior Chelsea Mottern continued her outstanding defensive play, collecting 17 digs in the match. 

In their second match of the Union Invitational against Oswego State, the Brewers were led by Bavosa with 11 kills, two block solos and a block assist. McGuire chipped in with five kills and nine digs. Once again, the architect of the straight set victory was Koenigs who had 31 set assists and contributed three block assists and a block solo. 

Vassar cruised to a 25-6 victory in the first set, using a strong serving game. The middle set 25-17 win was keyed by timely blocks and a total team effort.
