Volleyball Stays Unbeaten With Impressive 3-0 Sweep Over Montclair State

Box Score

MONTCLAIR, NJ (September 12, 2009) – Early into the 2009 season, the Vassar women's volleyball team is quickly learning that “spreading the wealth” leads to winning volleyball. Against Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon, seven different Brewers figured into the offensive attack, and led by freshman Chloe McGuire who had a match-high 13 kills, Vassar won its fourth straight match 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-14) over the Red Hawks.

The Brewers (4-0), who have yet to drop a set this season, now have a week to do some further fine-tuning for the Union Invitational on September 18-19. Montclair State drops to 1-4 and travels to Rowan on September 15 for its next match.

For the second straight match, McGuire led all players in kills. Coming off a 10 kill performance against Sage College on Wednesday, she earned 13 on 31 attempts with five errors. Sophomore Amy Bavosa pitched in with a season-best nine kills on 21 attempts with only two miscues. Near-perfect support came from junior Julianna Simon and senior Tess Johnson who had seven and six kills respectively between them (both on 12 attacks each) and each only had one hitting error. As a team the Brewers hit .297.

The architect of the season-best 42 kills was freshman Hilary Koenigs who topped the 30 assist mark for the second straight match with 31. She had a career-high 34 against Sage. And while the offense was working in rhythm, the defense, spearheaded by junior Chelsea Mottern with 13 digs, had 40 for the match. Bavosa had six digs while McGuire, Koenigs and senior Jasmin Iskandar each had five.

The Red Hawks stayed competitive in the second set, a narrow 25-22 loss, but could muster only a .126 hitting percentage for the match. Leading Montclair in kills was Samantha Karpinski with eight. The first two sets were identical wins for Vassar, both 25-14 victories.
