ALLENTOWN, PA (February 27, 2009) – In its most contested win of the season, the Vassar College women's tennis team picked up a 6-3 victory at Muhlenberg College on Friday. Vassar had breezed through its wins prior to Muhlenberg, with two sweeps, and two 8-1 wins. Junior Nicole Pontee (Homewood, IL/Homewood-Flossmoor), freshman Jennifer Beckerman (Santa Barbara, CA/Santa Barbara), and seniors Alexis Jacobson (New Canaan, CT/New Canaan) and Jamison Steele (Newport Beach, CA/Corona del Mar) all notched wins in both singles and doubles.

The Brewers improve to 5-1 overall, 2-0 in the spring. Vassar will next compete in a much warmer clime, heading to Los Angeles, California for a spring break trip in which the Brewers will face No. 7 Pomona College, No. 11 Bowdoin College, Occidental College, Kenyon College, and Chapman College.

Pontee picked up her wins at No. 1 singles and doubles, recording a 6-1, 6-1 win over Muhlenberg's Jenn Powell, and teaming with Steele to notch an 8-3 win over Powell and Carly Rotfeld. Steele also earned herself a 6-0, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.

Beckerman, the Liberty League Rookie of the Week on February 16, won her match at No. 2 doubles 6-4, 6-2, while also cruising to an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles with Jacobson. Jacobson notched her own singles win at the No.4 spot, with a 6-2, 6-2 win.

The No. 2 Brewers doubles team of freshman Joy Backer (Del Mar, CA/Torrey Pines) and senior Krista Romita (Baltimore, MD/Roland Park Country Day) dropped a tough 8-6 match. Vassar sophomore Elizabeth Anderson (San Francisco, CA/Lick-Wilmerding) also put her opponent to the test, with a narrow 2-6, 6-4, (10-5) loss to Danielle Winston.
