NORTHAMPTON, MA (October 10, 2009) – The Vassar women's volleyball team snapped a modest two-game losing streak with a pair of 3-0 victories this afternoon at the Seven Sisters Championships being hosted by Smith College. The Brewers cruised to a 25-18, 25-12 and 25-13 victory over Elms in the opening match and followed that with a 25-16, 25-20, 25-18 triumph over Smith.
The wins raise Vassar's record to 12-5 with the Seven Sisters Championship match against Wellesley (13-5) next on the docket on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. The Seven Sisters Championship was last held in 2007, with Vassar hosting. The Brewers advanced to the title game after sweeping Mt. Holyoke College and Bryn Mawr College, but fell in five sets to Wellesley College.
Both victories had a workmanlike flow for the Brewers. Against Elms, the Brewers had a sluggish first set, hitting just .121, but the next two sets resulted in only two attack errors. Sophomore
Amy Bavosa was especially efficient (9-1-16) and hit .500 for the match. Freshman
Chloe McGuire found her rhythm with eight kills and only two errors on 20 attempts. It helped lead Vassar to a .273 hitting percentage. Freshman
Hilary Koenigs had 26 of Vassar's 28 set assists.
Defensively, the Brewers had 40 digs with junior
Chelsea Mottern accounting for 11 and McGuire chipping in with 10. Five different players contributed to Vassar's 13 service aces.
Two different players highlighted the victory over Smith. Seniors
Tess Johnson and
Sarah Potts had 11 and 10 kills each, with Johnson attacking at a .455 clip and Potts a smidgen behind at .421. Koenigs orchestrated 28 of 29 set assists, and had recorded 20 or more set assists in every match but one this season. Once again the Vassar defense was superb. Mottern led the charge with 20 of 55 team dig, her third best performance of the season. McGuire had a 14 dig effort.
