MADISON, NJ (September 20, 2008) – Despite a stellar performance from Vassar goalkeeper
Jake London (Albany, NY/Albany) the Drew University men's soccer team scored early and late to defeat Vassar 2-0 at Ranger Stadium on Saturday.
Vassar falls to 2-2 and hosts Medgar Evers tomorrow at 2 p.m. in its final game before beginning Liberty League play next weekend. Drew improves to 5-1 and has not lost at home since 2006.
Anthony Pisani tallied in the first minute and Greg Zizik scored in the 75th as Drew ran its home unbeaten streak to 20 games before a Ranger Reunion crowd. The Rangers controlled the game with only London and his 12 saves preventing a larger win.
The Rangers controlled play, outshooting the Brewers 21-2 and holding an 11-2 edge in corner kicks.
Drew began the match in great form and a quick attack led to the opening goal within the first minute of play. A cross into the box got knocked around before falling to Pisani 12 yards out.
Drew continued to push forward in the first ten minutes of play. Zizik ripped a shot just wide and Marc Chiarello rose to thump two headers just off the target off set pieces. A few minutes later Zizik made a nice run out of middle field to set up a semi-break away with Jesse Puzio. Puzio's great first touch from Zizik's pass freed him of his defender, but the Brewer defender tracked well and made a
nice sliding tackle in the box. Midway through the half, Alex Degernesdrew a great save out of Vassar keeper
Jake London. Degernes headed just inside the post, but London's diving stop kept it out.
The Rangers started the second half in similar fashion, again putting Vassar on the back foot. Zizik got free and chipped over the unrushing keeper, but a Brewer defender got back to clear off the line. Another chance came and went for the Rangers after a swift attack down the left side. Jesse Puzio ripped a cross from 18 yards out; London was able to punch it away, but only as far as Bobby Sprengel near the 18 yard box. Sprengel crushed his first time volley, but it rose just a foot too high.
Zizik knocked in an insurance goal with fifteen minutes remaining in the game. The junior turned and fired in one motion on the half volley, clearing the keeper and sneaking it under the bar for the 2-0
