Women's Lax Rebounds With Impressive 15-12 Win Over Skidmore

Box Score

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (April 5, 2008) -- Vassar's women's showed its resiliency on Saturday afternoon by rebounding from a tough Friday Liberty League loss to Union with a start-to-finish 15-12 victory over Skidmore College in Liberty League action. The Brewers (5-2, 1-2) never trailed in the contest and saw the game tied five times -- the last at 10-10 with 16:40 to play, but then reeled off three straight goals to notch the victory.

Vassar snaps a brief two game losing streak and next faces Farmingdale State on the road Tuesday, April 8. The loss drops Skidmore to 2-7, 0-4.

The Brewers started quickly, taking a 3-0 lead on goals by freshman Sarah Warner (Ipswich, Mass.), junior Katama Martellucchi (Montclare, Pa.), and freshman Moe Byrne (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). The Thoroughbreds rallied back to tie it with three straight of their own. Abbie Klaus (Bethesda, Md.), Maggie Harding (Greenwich, Conn.), and Allie Vogel (Blauvelt, N.Y.) scored consecutive goals in a 3:40 span for the 3-3 tie.

That would be the back and forth pattern for the rest of the game, with Vassar taking the lead five times, only to have Skidmore battle back to tie it each time. The Brewers regrouped each time to prevent the Thoroughbreds from ever taking the lead.

Skidmore's Laura Flynn (Wellesley, Mass.) tied it for the final time, 10-10, for Skidmore with 17:40 to play. Vassar opened it back up to 13-10 with 11:38 to play with goals by Martellucci, sophomore Jennie McAllister (Bayshore, N.Y.), and junior Christine Eaccarino (Old Saybrook, Conn.), who had the game winning goal.

Skidmore mounted one final comeback with a pair of goals by Kimberly Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) with 5:54 and 4:56 to play to cut the lead to one, but Vassar's Castellan (Media, Pa.) converted a free position with 1:29 left and Warner scored her fourth goal of the game with 29 seconds on the clock for the 15-12 win.

Segalas finished with four goals and three ground balls for Skidmore. Vogel had two goals and an assist and Klaus scored twice. Lauren McCarthy (Ipswich, Mass.) had a goal, five ground balls, 10 draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Claire Molloy (Baltimore, Md.) had a goal and a team-high six ground balls.

For Vassar, Warner finished with four goals and two assists. McAllister scored four goals and Morgan had two goals and three assists.

Skidmore goalie Courtney DeStefano (Rehoboth, Mass.) had 11 saves, while Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, N.Y.) stopped 14 shots for Vassar.
