POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 25, 2008) -- Freshman Sarah Warner scored four goals and had one assist to lead the Vassar women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 victory over Rochester University Friday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
Vassar improves to 10-3 on the season and will host Liberty League leader and No. 4 ranked Hamilton College on Saturday in their final regular season game of the 2008 season. Rochester, which falls to 3-9 this season, will travel to Troy tomorrow to face RPI.
The Brewers got off to a quick start when senior Christine Castellan (Penncrest/Media, PA) scored off of a Christine Eaccarino (Old Saybrook/Old Saybrook, CT) assist just over two minutes into the game. Vassar then continued to build on its lead behind back-to-back free position goals by sophomore Jennie McAllister (Bayshore/Bayshore, NY). Freshman standout Warner (Waring/Ipswich, MA) finished off the Brewers four-goal run when she netted the first of four goals only five and a half minutes into the game. The rest of the first half was a back and forth affair that ended 7-4 when Rochester junior Megan Jenkins (CW Baker/Baldwinsville, NY) put a shot into the back of the net with only eleven seconds remaining in the half.
After Vassar built its lead to 12-7 with eight minutes remaining in the game, the Yellowjackets made one late game comeback. An unassisted goal by freshman Allyson Hogan (Victor/Victor, NY) and an own goal by the Vassar defense cut the lead to 12-9, but to no avail. The Brewers held on for the last three minutes of the game to bounce back from a heart-breaking loss to St. Lawrence last weekend.
Warner's four goals and one assist led the way for Vassar. Also helping seal the victory were McAllister, with three goals, Castellan with two, and junior Katama Martellucci (The Hill School/Montclaire, PA) with two. Senior goalkeeper Ariel Nelson (Harborfields/Greenlawn, NY) tallied nine saves for the Brewers.
Rochester was led by two-goal performances from Hogan, Mary Kate Hannan (Christian Brothers Academy/Syracuse, NY), and sophomore Amanda Case (Langley/McLean, VA). Junior goalkeeper Leslie Dube collected seven saves for the Yellowjackets.
