PURCHASE, NY (March 26, 2008) -- Senior Christine Castellan (Media, PA/Penncrest) put on an offensive show Wednesday night, scoring six goals to lead Vassar's women's lacrosse team to its fourth straight win, 15-9 over Manhattanville College. It was the second time in her career that Castellan has scored six goals, the last time coming against Wellesley on March 25, 2007. Her career high is seven, against both Bryn Mawr and Clarkson her sophomore season.
The Brewers (4-0) will host William Smith College on Friday, March 28, in the Liberty League opener for both teams, starting at 4:00 pm at Prentiss Field.
Four different Brewers got into the scoring column as Vassar jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the first half. Castellan scored three goals in each half. Vassar scored four straight goals to start the second half, increasing the lead to 10-3.
Junior Katama Martellucci (Montclare, PA/ The Hill School) scored three goals for the Brewers and freshman Sarah Warner (Ipswich, MA/The Waring School) added two.
Senior goalie Ariel Nelson (Greenlawn, NY/Harborfields) made 15 saves on the game, nine coming in the second half when the host Valiants mounted a comeback effort.
Vassar scored four straight goals to open the first half and four more in a row to start the second half to keep Manhattanville at bay throughout. The Valiants cut the deficit to four midway through the second half after falling in a 10-3 hole, but the Brewers scored three of the game's last four goals to pull away.
Manhattanville actually out-shot Vassar in both halves, 17-13 in the first and 23-14 in the second, for a 40-27 margin in the game. But only 24 of the Valiants' 40 shots were on cage.
