Women's Lacrosse Opens With 14-12 Win Over Ithaca

PALM BEACH, FL (March 11, 2008) -- Senior Christine Castellan scored three goals to lead Vassar's women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 shootout victory over Ithaca College in the season opener for both teams this evening. Castellan scored the game winner on a free position shot with just 11 minutes to play in the game.

The Brewers held a 7-5 halftime lead and both teams each scored seven goals in the second half, with the Brewers securing the victory.

Freshmen Maureen Bryne and Allie Morgan made their collegiate debuts successful, as each tallied two goals each, with Morgan adding an assist. Sophomore Jennie McAllister had a goal for the Brewers.

Senior Ariel Nelson made 13 saves for the Brewers.

The Brewers built a 12-7 second half lead following Morgan's second goal off a free position shot with 41:05 to play. Ithaca scored four straight goals to make the game 12-11 at 48:18. Castellan's goal made the the score 13-11. Ithaca got a 12th goal from Catherine Hurley.

The Brewers added an insurance goal from Julia Lehman with under ten minutes to play to secure the victory.

Ithaca College was led by Kim Media, who scored five goals. Hurely added three goals and Kylie McClure chipped in with two. Emily Brooks made 14 saves in goal for the Bombers.
