Nunn's Career Night Leads Men's Basketball Past Mount St. Mary, 62-59

Senior Scores 26 Points In Victory

NEWBURGH, NY (December 4, 2008) -- Senior forward Matt Nunn (Lower Gywnedd, PA/Abington Friends) scored a career high 26 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field, to propel the Vassar men's basketball team to a 62-59 victory over Mount St. Mary College, a victory that snapped the Brewers' three-game losing skid.

The Brewers, 4-3, now head into the final two games of the semester, this Saturday and Sunday, on an up tick. Vassar host both weekend games at 4:00 p.m. at the AFC against Neumann College and Masschusetts College of Liberal Arts. The Brewers will be idle until travelling to California for two games on January 7 and 9 against West Coast Baptist College and LaSierra College.

Mount St. Mary drops to 1-4 on the season and will begins its Skyline Conference schedule this Saturday against College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Nunn's 26-point outburst surpasses his previous high of 18 points tallied against Union College last February 16 in Schenectady. He distributed his points evenly, scoring 13 in each half. The game was tied only once, 3-3 at 17:48 mark of the first half. A Nunn jumper at 16:53 afforded the Brewers a lead they maintained throughout the game, albeit a precarious one that went down to the game's final seconds.

Even without a single lead change in the entire game, the result of Thursday night's Hudson Valley showdown still came down to a last second shot. Mount Saint Mary senior Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, N.J.) missed what would have been a game-tying three-pointer with one second remaining on the clock.

Leading by eight at the half, 31-23, Vassar pushed its advantage to 12 points in the opening minutes of the second half as Nunn scored the opening two buckets of the half. Back-to-back three pointers from the Mount cut the Vassar deficit to six, making for a tight second half.

After trading points for the next five minutes, Vassar senior guard Lenny Holt (Watertown, MA/Watertown) converted a three-point play to give the Brewers a 47-37 lead with under twelve minutes to play.

The Mount was quick to answer once again, getting back-to-back three pointers from freshman Will Hennep (Wheatley Heights, N.Y.) and Kuchar. Then, after a scoreless drought of nearly four minutes, Hennep hit a jumper from the elbow to cut the Vassar advantage to two, 49-47.

Leading 57-55 with just under three minutes to play, Holt made a nice move to the hoop, and was fouled. He converted a pair of free throws to make the lead four, 59-55. After a miss at the other end, Holt went to the hole again and extended the lead to six with a lay-up. A Mount turnover allowed the Brewers to run the clock down to under a minute to play, still leading by six.

Hennep managed to set up the last-second attempt for the Mount, converting a nice three-point play with 42 seconds remaining. After a Vassar turnover, Mount sophomore Tim Morris (Greenwich, N.Y.) launched a three-pointer from the corner that would have tied the game, but it went off the rim. Senior Chris Harrison (Baldwin, N.Y.) made a diving effort to get the ball back in place for the Mount, setting up Kuchar's final three-point attempt with just one second remaining.

Holt had 13 points and 8 rebounds and was key for the Brewers down the stretch. Freshman guard Caleb McGraw (Sitka, AK/Mount Edgecombe) chipped in 11 points for the Brewers.

Harrison led the way for the Blue Knights, , pouring in 21 points and adding 16 rebounds. Hennep was the only other player in double figures, totaling 10 points.

Vassar shot 46 percent from the floor as compared to just a 33 percent for Mount Saint Mary.
