Volleyball Finishes Season, Johnson Earns All-Liberty League

SCHENECTADY, NY (November 8, 2008) – The Vassar women's volleyball team concluded its season with a pair of tough losses in the second day of play at the Liberty League Championships at Union. In the morning match, Vassar was upended 3-0 by Union (15-25, 17-25, 19-25). In the final match of the championships, the Brewers lost a tough four set match to St. Lawrene 3-1, (25-27, 25-20, 23-25, 16-25). Vassar ends the season 11-23 and graduates two seniors hitter Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) and Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North). One player who will return next season, junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) was named to the Liberty League Second-Team in voting conducted by the league coaches.

Johnson led the Brewers in both kills and kills per game (259/2.19), along with attack percentage. Her 35 service aces were also best on the team. She had nine games with 10 or more kills, including a season-high 17 against Geneseo. She had 16 kills against CCNY and 15 versus Cortland in back-to-back games. The Cortland match was Johnson's finest of the season, making just one attack error in 29 attempts and hitting .483.

In the final match of the championships against St. Lawrence, Brewers freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) led the attack with 12 of Vassar's 43 kills. In a well-rounded game, Bavosa had 14 digs and a block assist. Johnson added 8 kills and 11 digs. Junior Sarah Potts (Bellevue, WA/Newport) and Phan each contributed six kills each. Phan also accounted for 20 assists and 14 digs in her final collegiate game. Junior Jasmin Iskandar (San Dimas, CA/Vivian Webb) led all players with 37 digs and in the process set a new career high for that category. That group combined for 78 of Vassar's 96 total digs.

In the opener match on Saturday morning, Johnson (7 kills) and Bavosa (6 kills) led the attack against a strong Union team. Iskandar had 14 digs and junior Chelsea Mottern (Bound Brook, NJ/Rutgers Prep) had a team-high 14 assists.
