Cross-Town Rival New Paltz Drops Brewers, 4-2

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, NY (October, 29, 2008) – The Vassar College men's soccer team netted two late goals, but it was not enough to erase a four-goal deficit, as cross town rivals SUNY New Paltz defeated Vassar, 4-2, on Wednesday.

The Brewers drop to 7-8 and look to finish the season at .500 as they host SUNY-Cortland on Saturday in their final home game. The Hawks improve to 7-8-3, 3-6-1 in SUNYAC competition.

Senior Matt Belli(Poughkeepsie,NY/Arlington), got the Brewers on board in the 86th minute when his shot was punched off the post into the back of the net by the Hawks' goalkeeper. It was Belli's third goal of the season. The senior midfielder has scored a goal in Vassar's last three games. Ross Macklin (Henniker, NH/John Stark Regional) assisted on the goal.

Junior Brian Bianchetti (Tustin, CA/Foothill) made the final deficit two goals with a score in the 89th minute. Bianchetti ripped a shot to the left corner off the post that came right back to him and put his rebound into the back of the net. The goal represented his team-leading ninth of the season.

The Hawks opened the scoring in the tenth minute when Chris Hotzak (Smithtown, NY/St. James) found Tommy Garafola (Richmond Hill, NY/St. Francis Prep) who ripped a shot top left corner to beat the goalkeeper. In the 36th minute, Hotzak added his second assist on a touch pass to James Altadonna (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) to beat the diving Brewers goalkeeper right corner. The Hawks led 2-0 at the half.

Garafola added his second goal in the 54th minute when Joe Emberger (Poughkeepsie, NY/Roy C. Ketchum) with a quick touch found Tommy Willoughby (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) who then found Garafola to increase the lead to 3-0. In the 83rd minute, Nick Lamon (Hewlett, NY/Hewlett) ripped a shot off the Brewers goalkeeper and Joe Rose (Seaford, NY/Seaford) found the back of the net for the goal.

Belli, Ben Scaglione (Elizabethtown, NY/Elizabethtown Lewis), and Brett Anker (Stormville,
NY/Carmel) tested the Hawks goalie with some good looks at the net, but Patrick Carlucci (Goshen, NY/Gosehn) came up with big stops, recording eight saves to help New Paltz to the win. Belli led the Brewers with five shots, four on goal, and Bianchetti chipped in with five shots, two on goal.

Jason Cetel (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made four saves in net.
