Volleyball Shuts Down John Jay, 3-0

NEW YORK, NY (October 16, 2008) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team will head into Fall break on a winning note. Behind 11 kills from senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara), the Brewers swept past John Jay College 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-11) Thursday night.

The win improves Vassar to 11-14 on the season, while John Jay drops to 6-8 and next faces Medgar Evers on October 21. Vassar will remain idle until returning to New York on Wednesday, October 29 to face Hunter College at 6:00 pm. It will be Vassar's second meeting against Hunter, the first coming at the Cortland Invitational where the Hawks won 3-1(16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 14-25).

Newton had a brilliant game for the Brewers, having only one attack error in 19 chances and hitting .526 for the match -- her best performance this season. She also added 10 digs. Freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) had eight kills.

Two Brewers had eight digs in the contest, junior Jasmin Iskandar (San Dimas, CA/Vivian Webb) and freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport).

Coming off a recent career-high 18 assists, sophmore Yevgeniya Sergeyenko (Brooklyn, NY/ Brooklyn Technical) had 11 in the match. Senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North0 had ten.

Tatyana Yachnik had a team high seven kills for John Jay. Andrea Madina led all playes with 13 digs and Erica Lee had 11 assists.

The Brewers scored the first three points of the contest and led 12-3 midway through the opening set behind the servicing of Arena who had one ace during the rally and two in the contest.

John Jay got to within seven points of the lead and trailed 17-10 behind Medina who had a pair of aces during the spurt. But Vassar kept the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way en route to the first set win.

Vassar scored the first two points of the second set and never trailed in the set. John Jay got to within one point of the lead twice in the set, most recently at 5-4 on a kill by Yachnik. Vassar maintained a comfortable lead before increasing the margin at the midway point of the set. Up 13-7 the Brewers rallied off five in a row to take an 18-7 advantage en route to going up 2-0 in the match.

Vassar scored the first three points in the third set, which included a kill by Newton. John Jay got to within one point of the lead twice in the early stages and trailed 4-3 but the Brewers outscored the Bloodhounds 9-3 to take a 13-6 lead. John Jay rallied off a pair of points to get to within five points of the lead at 13-8.

Vassar then scored seven in a row to make the score 20-8, which included a pair of kills by sophmomore Julianna Simon (Sandy, UT/Waterford School) who had five kills and two blocking assists, en route to the win.
