Johnson's Leads To Split At Cortland Invite

CORTLAND, NY (October 11, 2008) -- Junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) had 31 total kills in two matches, and her play helped lead the Vassar women's volleyball team to a split of its two matches against City College of New York and Cortland in the final day of play at the Cortland Invitational Saturday afternoon at Corey Gymnasium.The Brewers defeated CCNY in the first match 3-2 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11) and lost to host Cortland 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 17-25, 15-25).

Overall, the Brewers went 2-2 in Friday and Saturday's action, and will take a 10-14 record into an away match against John Jay College on Thursday, October 16 sat 6:00 pm. Vassar will then have 13 days off before resuming play on the road against Hunter College on Wednesday, October 29 at 6:00 pm.

In the four matches, which include Friday's competition against Geneseo and Hunter, Johnson accumulated 55 kills. She had 16 in Saturday's victory over CCNY and 15 versus Cortland, with only one attack error. Johnson also had 11 digs in the CCNY victory.

Against CCNY, the second match of the four Vassar played that the Brewers prevailed in five sets, senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) had 12 kills and eight digs. Freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) had 11 kills. The architect of Vassar's attack was senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) who had 27 assists. Freshman freshman Mary-Chris Arena had 19 digs and junior Julianna Simon (Sandy, UT/Waterford School) had three block assists.

Against Cortland, the gritty Brewers had 11 team blocks, but it wasn't enough to force a five set. Newton had nine kills and 10 digs and the tandem of Bavosa and Simon up front had a four and three block assists respectively. Each player had one block solo. Sophomore Yevgeniya Sergeyenko (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn Technical) had 18 assists which sets a new seaon and career high, surpassing the 17 assists she had against Union this season.
