POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 11, 2008) – The Vassar College men's soccer team held off St. Lawrence University for nearly 70 minutes, but a Kiel Dwyer goal broke a scoreless tie to lift St. Lawrence to a 1-0 victory in Liberty League play at Gordon Field on Saturday.
Vassar drops to 6-5-0 (1-3-0) on the season, while Saint Lawrence improves to 7-5-0 (2-2-0). The Brewers will continue their home stand next Saturday against Liberty League rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) at 2 p.m.
The lone goal of the game came from Saint Lawrence senior forward Dwyer (Warwick, RI/ Toll Gate High School) with just 20:33 to play in the game. A through ball from classmate Paul LaMarca(Mesa, AZ/Red Mountain) found Dwyer alone in the right side of the box, allowing him to drill a shot past diving goalie
Jake London (Albany, NY/Albany). The ball hit the left post and rolled into the net to give the Saints the eventual game-winning goal.
A bright spot for the Brewers was the goalkeeping of London, who had nine saves on the afternoon and faced a total of 33 shots. It looked as if the Saints were going to score again when junior forward Emmanuel Mbong (Norman,OK/Norman) broke away from a Vassar defender into the box, but London came streaking out of the net to make a spectacular diving save and keep the deficit at one.
Vassar came close to tying the game up with just over eleven minutes to play, as freshman forward
Eli London (University, OH/Cleveland Heights) crossed the ball to the left side of the field to find an open
Brian Bianchetti (Tustin, CA/Foothill), but his hard-kicked shot went just to the left of the net.
Both teams played to a scoreless first half, although five of Vassar's seven shots came in the first period along with 17 of Saint Lawrence's 33. Bianchetti and sophomore forward
Ben Scaglione (Elizabethtown, NY, Elizabethtown Lewis) led the Brewers with two shots each. LaMarca and freshman midfielder Alex Soto (Lorton, VA/South County Sec.) had six shots apiece for the Saints.
London falls to 3-4-0 with the loss while Saint Lawrence goalkeeper Emilio Coletta (Montreal, Que/Marianapolis College), who had three saves on the day, improves to 7-5-0.
