Volleyball Splits Matches At Cortland Invite

CORTLAND, NY (October 10, 2008) -- The Vassar women's volleyball team had a marathon night of competition at the two-day Cortland Invitational, splitting its opening two matches against Geneseo and Hunter College Friday night at Corey Gymnasium. In opening play, the Brewers defeated Geneseo 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 15-5) and in the nightcap match, fell to Hunter 3-1 (16-25, 25-22, 20-25, 14-25).

Heading into Saturday's action, the Brewers have a 9-13 record and will face CCNY at Noon and host Cortland at 2:00 pm.

Led by junior Tess Johnson (Henderson, NV/Green Valley) who had a season high 17 kills, the Brewers won a long first match against Geneseo, taking the last set 15-5. Playing one of her strongest games of the season, Johnson had a seaon best 18 digs, surpassing the previous season high of 17 she had against Stevens Institute on Wendesday night. Johnson also added three service aces.

Senior Katie Newton (Carpinteria, CA/Santa Barbara) contributed 11 kills, 14 digs, two block assists and a block solo. In the match, Vassar was particularly strong defensivfely, getting another double figure digs effort from freshman Mary-Chris Arena (Fairport, NY/Fairport) with 15 and a strong first match from senior Mailynh Phan (Holbrook, NY/Sachem North) who had 15 dgis. Phan supplied 41 assists, which not only set a season and career high, but easily surpassed the previous total of 30 set against St. Lawrence.

Both junior Sarah Potts (Bellevue, WA/ Newport) and freshman Amy Bavosa (Eastport, NY/Eastport Southmanor) had nine kills each. Potts had three service aces and one block assists and Bavosa contributed two block solos and one block assist.

In the nightcap against Hunter, a four set loss, Bavosa led the way with nine kills, one block assist and block solo. Johnson had seven kills and 15 digs while Phan continued to distribute effectively with 28 assists. She added four service aces and six digs. Arena had a 12 dig, three service ace outing against Hunter.
