Field Hockey Falls to #1 Christopher Newport

Brewers will open conference play against Rochester on Friday

Wellesley, MA - The Vassar College Field Hockey team made the trip to Wellesley College on Friday afternoon to take on #1 Christopher Newport as the Brewers fell 3-0 at Butler Stadium. Vassar's record moves to 5-3 on the season while the Captains improve to 7-0 overall.

How It Happened
  • CNU had a strong chance in the opening quarter as Avery Mast's shot off a corner was stopped by a defensive save from senior Anna Hazewindus to keep the game scoreless.
  • The Captains struck first with six minutes left in the first half on a goal from Kelly Via followed by a tally from Mast just 35 seconds later to make it 2-0.
  • Christopher Newport added a third goal with just over a minute left in the first half from Courtney Hughlett to hold a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
  • VC had two strong shots off a corner from sophomores Sophia Jammar and Julia Morris that were both saved by Ella Fallen in the third period to hold the final 3-0 lead.
For The Brewers
  • Jammar, Morris and sophomore Audrey Izzo each registered a shot on goal while junior Mackenzie Allen and senior Karina Hoffman each added a shot.
  • Hazewindus made her first defensive save of the year while first year Kendra Pitts made three saves in 30 minutes of action in goal.
  • Senior Grace Wiley played the second half in net and did not allow a goal while making one save.
For The Captains
  • Co. Hughlett, Via and Mast each scored a goal while Caroline Hughlett and Calli Martin each tallied an assist.
  • Fallen earned the shutout victory in net for the Captains and made three saves.
Game Statistics
  • CNU held a 12-5 advantage in shots and 8-3 in shots on target.
  • The Captains also held a 9-2 edge in penalty corners.

  • Vassar will open up Liberty League play on Friday, October 2 against Rochester at home at 4:00 p.m.
  • Christopher Newport is scheduled to take on #6 Middlebury on Sunday afternoon.
