Sydney Yu, the Vassar College Field Hockey team opened Liberty League play with a 4-1 victory over Rochester at Weinberg Field on Friday afternoon. Vassar's record improves to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Yellowjackets drop to 7-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.
How It Happened
- Vassar opened the scoring early in the first quarter as Yu knocked home a rebound from sophomore Sophia Jammar's shot at the nine minute mark to put the Brewers on top early.
- The Brewers doubled the lead with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period behind sophomore Julia Morris' third goal of the season off a sweet pass from classmate Remy Phan.
- Rochester cut the deficit in half two minutes into the second quarter on Hannah Metra's deflection of Kristina Federova's shot following an insert from Sophia Cuneo.
- VC pushed its lead back to two goals at 3-1 with six minutes to go in the first half on Hoffman's first goal off an assist from Yu.
- Three saves from first year Kendra Pitts in the fourth quarter kept the Vassar lead at 3-1 before Hoffman's second goal of the contest in the final minute and a half of regulation gave Vassar its final 4-1 lead.
For The Brewers
- Hoffman's two goals now puts her at four for the season, tying for her for the team lead, while Yu's three point performance gives her a team-high 10 points, including a team-tying four goals.
- Morris scored her third goal of the season while Phan posted her second assist of the campaign.
- Sophomore Autumn Dowiak, junior Zoe Robinson and Jammar each added two shots on target.
- Pitts earned her fifth win of the season in goal after making four saves for the Brewers.
For The Yellowjackets
- Mehtra scored her eighth goal of the season while Cuneo and Federova each notched their second assist of the season.
- Erin Foley tallied two shots on goal along with Sophia Marcotte and Federova added a shot on target.
- Katherine Jensen took the loss in goal as she made four saves in the first half in net.
- Riley Lesser recorded a game-high nine saves in the second half in goal for Rochester.
Game Statistics
- Vassar finished the matchup outshooting Rochester 24-10 overall and 18-5 in shots on goal.
- Vassar also held the advantage in penalty corners at 12-9.
