Field Hockey Wins Third Straight in Shootout Triumph Over Scranton

Dowiak scores game-winning goal to close the shootout against the Royals

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team earned its third straight victory on Tuesday evening as the Brewers outlasted Scranton for a 1-0 shootout victory at Weinberg Field. Vassar's record improves to 5-2 overall while the Royals fall to 5-2 on the season.

How It Happened
  • The first scoring threats came in the second quarter as Scranton's goalkeeper Ruby Sorber made three saves in a five-minute stretch along with a defensive save by Kate McKillop.
  • Vassar first year Kendra Pitts answered with two saves of her own in the final two minutes of the first half to keep the game scoreless.
  • In the third period, Sorber made four more saves while Pitts added two saves of her own to send the game to the fourth quarter with no score.
  • Vassar had the lone chances in the fourth quarter as Sorber made one more stop with just over six minutes left to extend the game to overtime.
  • The Brewers earned a corner in the first overtime period and Sorber made two more saves on two strong shots from sophomore Audrey Izzo to push the game to the second OT period.
  • VC had the lone shot on target in the second OT period as Sorber turned away one more shot fired by junior Mackenzie Allen to send the battle to the shootout period.
  • Vassar was first in the shootout period as Sorber made a stop followed by Scranton's Olivia Burdo making her attempt to take a 1-0 lead in the shootout.
  • Izzo countered with a make of her own to even the period as Pitts made a stop on Maggie Keys to keep it tied at one.
  • Sorber kept Vassar off the board on its next attempt followed by Pitts stopping the next attempt to move it to the fourth round tied at one.
  • Sophomore Sydney Yu scored on her attempt and once again, Pitts made a stop to give the Brewers a chance to win the game on its next attempt.
  • Sophomore Autumn Dowiak closed the game on her make to send Vassar to its third straight victory.
For The Brewers
  • Allen, Izzo and Yu each fired three shots on goal while sophomore Julia Morris added four shots.
  • Sophomore Sophia Jammar, Morris and junior Zoe Robinson each tallied a shot on target.
  • Pitts earned her fourth victory of the season and third solo shutout behind five saves.
For The Royals
  • Burdo finished with two shots on goal while Keys, OIivia Dougherty and Julia Opperman each fired a shot on target.
  • McKillop registered a defensive save and Sorber made 11 saves in the loss in goal.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar finished the game outshooting Scranton 21-6 along with 12-5 in shots on target.
  • The Brewers also held a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners.
