Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Women's Volleyball team narrowly fell in a five-set thriller on Wednesday evening at Kenyon Hall as the Brewers dropped a 25-23, 21-25, 27-29, 25-15, 11-15 decision to Williams. Vassar's record moves to 5-3 overall while the Ephs improve to 5-2.
First Set
- Williams held a 6-4 lead to begin the match as Adalena Rodgers buried back-to-back kills.
- VC battled back to take a 9-8 lead behind a kill and an ace from senior Holland Kaplan and a winner from first year Gina O'Connell.
- The Ephs lead expanded back to 17-13 on two kills from Clara Massey until the Brewers regained the lead at 21-18 behind two O'Connell kills and another kill and ace from Kaplan.
- Williams once again regained the advantage on an ace from Morgan Daetz before the Brewers scored the final three points, capped by a kill from junior Erin Lovett, to win the opening set.
Second Set
- VC notched a 6-2 lead to open the second set as senior Maura McAusland tallied a kill and an ace along with a kill and two blocks from Lovett.
- The Brewers extended the lead on three winners from Kaplan and a block from O'Connell and Kaplan to 12-6.
- Williams rattled off nine of the next 10 points to take a 15-13 lead, capped by a block from Elsa Miller and Kate Lane.
- The Ephs ran the lead up to 22-16 on a winner from Chidimma Obi before VC cut the lead to 23-20 on an ace from senior T Petro.
- Williams evened the match at one set apiece on kills from Massey and Lane.
Third Set
- Willams collected a 6-3 lead to start the third set on kills from Obi and Marin Vaughns.
- Vassar took its first lead of the set at 12-11 behind kills from McAusland, Lovett and sophomore Elena Feuer along with a solo block from Lovett.
- The lead expanded to 18-16 on winners from Kaplan and McAusland.
- The Ephs scored six consecutive points as three kills from Lane and two winners from Obi pushed Williams ahead 22-18.
- Vassar brought the set even at 23 on a solo block from Lovett and extended the set to 27 all on a winner from junior Eleanor Gegen.
- Williams scored the final two points of the set on a Vaughns kill and a block from Miller and Obi to win the third set 29-27.
Fourth Set
- Vassar dominated the fourth set as the Brewers raced out to a 9-3 lead behind two kills each from Kaplan and Lovett and an ace from senior Francesca Medrano.
- VC's lead expanded the advantage to 15-7 following an ace from Petro, a kill each from O'Connell, Kaplan and McAusland and a solo block from O'Connell.
- The Brewers lead grew to 22-13 following two kills each from McAusland and O'Connell.
- Vassar extended the match to a deciding fifth set after a kill each from Feuer and McAusland and a McAusland ace.
Fifth Set
- Vassar held a 5-3 lead to begin the final set following two kills from Kaplan and a winner each from Feuer and Lovett.
- Williams knotted the set at six and pulled ahead 9-7 on an ace from Eve Kaplan.
- Back-to-back kills from McAusland and Kaplan tied the set at nine before a Ephs error knotted the set at 10.
- The Ephs closed the final set with five of the final six points, led by a kill each from Lane and Miller and a block from Obi and Miller.
For The Brewers
- Kaplan tallied 17 kills (.295), two aces, a block and four digs while Lovett collected 15 kills (.379), five blocks (three solo) and three digs.
- McAusland posted 12 kills, two aces and 10 digs along with Feuer recording seven kills and three blocks.
- O'Connell added seven kills and two blocks (one solo) while Medrano finished with 48 assists, two aces and 14 digs.
- First year Riley Huang notched 13 digs and an ace along with Petro recording two aces and seven digs.
For The Ephs
- Lane led the way with a match-high 22 kills (.513) and 16 digs while Obi totaled 10 kills and four blocks.
- Massey registered nine kills and four blocks (two solo) along with Miller recording seven kills and seven blocks.
- Ellie Simmons chipped in five kills and five digs while Vaughns added four kills.
- Morgan Daetz registered 28 assists, two aces and three digs along with Lily Carstens finished with 22 assists and six digs.
- Kaplan lifted a match-high 27 digs.
