Brewers Falter Against #11 Cortland

Vassar suffers second straight defeat

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team returned home Saturday afternoon and was dealt a 3-0 non-conference loss by #11 Cortland. Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) led the team with three shots and fellow senior Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY) made one save in goal.
 
Saturday's loss, Vassar's second straight, drops it to 1-2-1 overall on the season while the Red Dragons improve to a perfect 4-0.
 
How It Happened
  • Neither team would generate a shot early in the contest until a Clement Grossman (Cold Spring, NY) shot missed just outside the left post in the 10th minute.
  • Cortland did not register its first shot until the 23rd minute when Gaetano Corrao misfired at the 22:39 mark.
  • The two teams played scoreless until the late stages of the first half when Cortland broke through with the eventual goal in the 34th minute.
  • Sam LaMendola picked up a rebound inside the box and tallied at the 33:34 mark to send the Red Dragons into the break with a 1-0 lead.
  • The visitors outshot Vassar 7-2 over the opening 45 minutes.
  • Corner kicks in the first half were even at three per side.
  • Cortland maintained the one-goal advantage until the final 10 minutes before it struck twice just over four minutes apart.
  • Iago Lopez doubled the Red Dragons' lead in the 84th minute before Owen Brant closed out the scoring in the 88th minute.
  • Cortland held the advantage in second half shots 10-4.
  • Vassar took two of the three corner kicks awarded after the intermission.
 
For The Brewers
  • Raphan made one save in goal for the Brewers in his fourth start of the season.
  • Torrey paced the Brewers with three shots in the game, including the team's only shot on goal.
  • Grossman, Alejandro Martinez (Lake Mary, FL) and Ken Hoang (Fort Lee, NJ) added shots for Vassar in the contest.
 
For The Red Dragons
  • Cortland posted its fourth straight shutout to open the season.
  • LaMendola and Lopez both scored their first goals of the season.
  • Brant tallied for the second time in the team's first four games.
  • Kempton, Diego Rivera and Aidan Marshall all picked up assists in the contest.
  • Jake Hutter and Corrao led the team with four shots apiece.
  • Jordan Ott earned the shutout in goal with one save for the Red Dragons.
