Hotz Totals Three Points In Season Opening Victory Over Montclair State

Brewers post first win over Montclair State since 1994

Poughkeepsie, NY – Sophomore Zapp Hotz (Ridgewood, NY) finished with a goal and an assist and Alejandro Martinez (Lake Mary, FL) scored his first goal of the season as the Vassar College Men's Soccer team won its third straight season opener with a 2-1 win over Montclair State Tuesday afternoon.
 
Vassar improves to 1-0-0 on the season and scores its first victory over Montclair State since 1994 with the Red Hawks starting the season 0-1-0.
 
How It Happened
  • Vassar opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Martinez found the back of the net with the team's first goal of the 2026 season.
  • Hotz crossed a ball from the right wing that Martinez headed home at the 27:16 mark of the contest.
  • The Brewers carried the one-goal advantage into the intermission and out shot Montclair State 9-6 over the first 45 minutes of action.
  • First half corner kicks also went to the Brewers by a 5-2 margin.
  • Vassar goalkeeper, Jacob Raphan (Oceanside, NY), turned aside a pair of Red Hawk attempts in the first half while Montclair State's Pierre Soumeillant made a trio of saves prior to the break.
  • Vassar came out of halftime and got what proved to be the game winning goal just 66 seconds into the second stanza.
  • Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC) started a free kick and following a deflection near the top of the box Hotz buried a shot inside the top right corner for a 2-0 lead at the 46:06 mark of the match.
  • Vassar maintained the two-goal lead into the late stages of regulation time when Montclair State broke through in the 79th minute.
  • Branden Cardigan played a ball from behind midfield to Kyle Moore who found Tomas Monteiro inside the box. Monteiro deposited his first goal of the season at 78:21 to bring the visitors to within a shot with just over 11 minutes left to play.
  • Montclair State would outshoot Vassar 3-0 after the goal, but would be unable to find the equalizer.
  • The Red Hawks finished the second half with a 9-4 advantage in shots and took five of the six corner kicks after halftime.
  • Raphan turned aside three shots after the break to earn the win in goal.
 
For The Brewers
  • Hotz opens the season with a three-point effort with his initial goal and assist of the campaign.
  • Martinez scored for the fourth time in his young career with Tuesday's opening tally.
  • Allen found the assist column with his first helper and point of the year.
  • Martinez and First Year Arata Yamazaki (West Harrison, NY) led the Brewers with three shots apiece in the contest.
  • Raphan earned his 21st career win in goal with a five-save performance against the Red Hawks.
 
For The Red Hawks
  • Monteiro found the back of the net for the first time in 2026 with the Red Hawks' lone goal of the day.
  • Cadigan and Moore each picked up their first points of the season with helpers on the tally.
  • Cadigan and Monteiro were two of four players to lead Montclair State with two shots in the game.
  • Soumeillant suffered the loss in goal with five saves for Montclair State.

  • Montclair State held a slim 15-13 advantage in shots on Tuesday with Vassar posting a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
