Ithaca, NY – The #27 Vassar College Men's Tennis team saw its 11-match winning streak stopped Sunday morning following a hard fought 4-3 defeat to #24 Skidmore in the Liberty League Championship Final.
Sunday's loss drops Vassar to 16-6 overall on the season with the 16 wins marking a program record for wins in a season. The Thoroughbreds avenge a 6-1 loss to the Brewers on April 25 and improve to 15-5 overall while winning their 16th conference crown.
Doubles
- Skidmore battled to the doubles point on Sunday, taking tight decisions at both the second and third positions.
- Vassar's top pair of Fernando Bauermeister (Winter Park, FL) and Nolan Kubiak (Oregon, WI) won their 12th match of the spring with a tight 7-5 victory.
- Eugene Lee (Chico, CA) and Jonas Santos (Las Vegas, NV) suffered a hard fought 5-7 defeat at the third position.
- With the doubles point coming down to the middle pairings, Skidmore's Nika Mori and Fletcher King outlasted Pedro Cattaruzzi (Chatham, NJ) and Junchen Jia (Vail, AZ) 7-6 (7-3) to open a 1-0 lead.
Singles
- Vassar surged in front 3-1 after taking singles decisions at the first, third and sixth positions.
- Lee evened the match with his team leading 14th win of the spring, dispatching Skidmore's Yuval Goodman 6-1, 6-1.
- First Year Shrey Choudhary (Farmingdale, CT) gave the Brewers a 2-1 advantage after scoring a 6-3, 6-0 sixth singles win over Mori.
- Kubiak pushed Vassar to within a win of the title at the third slot, scoring a 6-3, 6-3 win over King.
- Trailing by two, Skidmore's Kyle Lundberg, the championship's Most Outstanding Performer, outlasted Bauermeister 7-5, 7-5 at the second slot.
- Radin Sadeghi brought the Thoroughbreds even at 3-3 after earning a 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 fifth singles victory.
- The title came down to third singles where Jia suffered a heartbreaking 1-6, 6-4, 4-6 defeat to Ege Topbas.
