Baseball Drops Crossover Series Opener Against RIT

Brewers will need to win both games tomorrow to advance to the Liberty League Championship

Rochester, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team dropped the opening game of the Liberty League Crossover Divisional Series on Friday afternoon as the Brewers fell 7-3 to RIT on the road in rainy conditions. Vassar's record moves to 13-19 overall while the Tigers improve to 20-12.

How It Happened
  • Vassar struck first in the top of the third inning as sophomore Dash Edwards reached on a one-out single to left and came all the way around to score on senior Jensen Bergman's opposite field double to put the Brewers ahead 1-0.
  • RIT put up a big inning in the bottom of the fifth as the Tigers scored six runs on a safety squeeze bunt from Mikey Zacher, a RBI infield single from Trent Rapp, a three-RBI triple from Roberto Reade and a wild pitch that scored Reade to take a 6-1 lead.
  • The Tigers added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on a RBI double from Charlie Slaymaker to push the lead to 7-1.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 7-3 in the top of the ninth on a two-RBI double from first year Jack Johnson with two outs but Ryan Merkov recorded the final out to complete the game one victory.
For The Brewers
  • Senior Addison Lee took the loss as he went seven innings, allowing five hits, six runs, three walks and struck out 10. Lee now ranks third all-time in Vassar history in strikeouts with 145 for his career and his 52 strikeouts this season is tied for fourth in a single season.
  • Edwards finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Bergman tallied a double and a run batted in.
  • Johnson drove in two runs with a double along with first year Kieran McGrath and first year Ethan Fox-Fernadez finishing with a hit and a run scored.
For The Tigers
  • Reade recorded two hits, including a triple, and three runs batted in while Slaymaker totaled two hits, including a double, and a RBI.
  • Rapp posted a hit and a RBI along with Zacher knocking in a run.
  • Evan Kurtz and Sam Kulp each registered a hit and a run scored.
  • Ryan Moran earned his fifth win of the season after throwing seven innings and giving up five hits, one run, two walks and struck out three.
Up Next
  • The two teams will meet tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 p.m. with Vassar needing to win to force the deciding game three at 3:00 p.m.
