Baseball Splits Final Home Twinbill Against Wesleyan

Brewers fall in pitcher's duel in game one, bounce back with 8-5 win in game two

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team split its final home doubleheader of the season as the Brewers fell in a 2-0 pitcher's duel in game one against Wesleyan before bouncing back with a 8-5 win over the Cardinals in the nightcap.

Vassar's record moves to 13-18 overall while Wesleyan moves to 12-20 on the season.

Game 1 - Wesleyan 2 Vassar 0 (Seven Innings)

How It Happened
  • Wesleyan opened the scoring in the second as Sam Hensinger knocked in a run with a single and put runners on second and third with one out but Vassar junior Will Darrell recorded back-to-back strikeouts to limit the damage.
  • Vassar's biggest threat came in the third as first year Eric Wallick singled and classmate Nick Kreatsoulas walked to put runners at first and second with no outs.
  • The Cardinals starter Shamus Kelly escaped the jam with a groundout double play and a groundout to second to keep the Brewes off the scoreboard.
  • Wesleyan added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on a RBI infield single from James Marsden to extend the lead to 2-0.
  • Vassar threatened in the bottom of the seventh after loading the bases with two outs but Cole Perkin escaped the rally with a groundout to seal the 2-0 victory.
For The Brewers
  • First year Ethan Fox-Fernandez and Wallick had a hit apiece.
  • Darrell took the tough luck loss as he went five innings, allowing five hits, one run, two walks and struck out four.
  • Junior Sage Roy-Burman tossed two relief innings, giving up two hits, one run and struck out three.
For The Cardinals
  • Marsden finished 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI while Cole Sipes tallied two hits.
  • Hensinger knocked in a run with a hit along with Kato Mangum and Sebastian Ortiz each having a double and a run scored.
  • Kelly earned his fourth win of the season after tossing four shutout innings, allowing two hits, two walks and struck out one.
  • Perkin notched his first save of the season behind three scoreless relief innings and striking out three.
Game 2 - Vassar 8 Wesleyan 5 (Seven Innings)

How It Happened
  • The Cardinals struck for three runs in the top of the second as Mangum scored on an error, Marcus Jang plated a run on a double and Ortiz knocked in a run with a single to make it 3-0.
  • Jonah Timmons' RBI single expanded the lead to 4-0 in the top of the third for Wesleyan.
  • Vassar countered with three runs in the bottom half of the third following Kreatsoulas scoring on an error and first year Jack Biskupiak knocking in two runs with a double to cut the lead to 4-3.
  • The Brewers took its first lead of the game in the fifth as junior Noah Stockman singled down the third base line with two outs to put VC ahead 5-4.
  • VC posted three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth on a two-RBI triple from senior Jensen Bergman and a RBI single from Biskupiak to push the lead to 8-4.
  • Wesleyan threatened in the seventh as Tucker DeWolf scored on a wild pitch and the Cardinals sent the tying run to the plate but first year Noah Sternberg entered with two outs and induced a fly out to earn his first save of the season.
For The Brewers
  • Biskupiak notched a 2-for-3 day with a double and three runs batted in while Bergman tallied a triple, three runs scored and two RBI.
  • Kreatsoulas posted two hits and a two run scored along with Stockman recording a hit and two runs batted in.
  • Fox-Fernandez added a hit and a run scored while first year Garrison Sobo registered a hit.
  • Junior Grant Maryott took a no-decision as he went the first 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned), a walk and struck out two.
  • First year Eric Wallick earned the win as he went 2.2 innings in relief, allowing two hits, one run, three walks and three strikeouts.
  • Sternberg picked up his first save of his career after getting the final out of the seventh inning.
For The Cardinals
  • Marsden went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Timmons totaled two hits and a RBI.
  • Jang, Ortiz and Hensinger all notched a hit and a run batted in.
  • Marsden took a no-decision after throwing three innings, allowing one hit, three runs (no earned), four walks and struck out one.
  • Colin Lautzenheiser took the loss as he went two innings, giving up three hits, two runs, two walks and struck out one.
Up Next
  • Vassar is scheduled to take on NYU on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
  • Wesleyan will face off with Nichols on Wednesday.
