Baseball Earns Key Series Victory in Sweep of Skidmore

Vassar scores two one-run victories, including a 12 inning marathon, to sweep road doubleheader

Saratoga Springs, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team earned a key conference series victory over Skidmore on Saturday as the Brewers earned a 5-4 comeback victory in 12 innings in the first game of the doubleheader before holding off the Thoroughbreds in game two to collect a 6-5 win to win the series. Vassar's record improves to 11-16 overall and 7-7 (5-7 East) in Liberty League play while Skidmore's record drops to 16-12 on the season and 4-8 (3-7 East) in conference action.

Game 1 - Vassar 5 Skidmore 4 (12 innings)

How It Happened
  • The Thoroughbreds struck first in the bottom half of the first inning as Jack Collins' opposite-field RBI double plated Quinn McDonald to take a 1-0 lead.
  • In the second, Skidmore added two runs following a bases loaded hit by pitch of McDonald and Landon Schwartzman scored on a double play to push the lead to 3-0.
  • Vassar cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth after sophomore Dash Edwards reached on an infield single and senior Jensen Bergman blasted his second homer of the season.
  • The Skidmore advantage increased to 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Holden Caney singled, advanced to second on a sac bunt, stole third and then scored on an error.
  • The Brewers cut the lead to 4-3 in the eighth as Bergman came across to score on a throwing error before first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez's RBI single in the ninth tied the game at four and sent the game to extra innings.
  • Skidmore put runners on the corners with no outs in the 10th inning but senior right-hander Cade Terada-Herzer induced a shallow fly out, a strikeout and a line out to keep the Thoroughbreds off the scoreboard.
  • Vassar broke through in the top of the 12th as Bergman led off with a single, advanced to second on a Fox-Fernandez sacrifice bunt, moved to third on a single from first year Kieran McGrath, and scored on a two-out RBI single from first year Jack Biskupiak to take a 5-4 lead.
  • The Thoroughbreds got a runner into scoring position with one out but junior Sage Roy-Burman got a fly out and a strikeout looking to clinch the opening game of the doubleheader.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman finished 3-for-5 with two RBI, a homer, a double and three runs scored while Fox-Fernandez tallied two hits and a run batted in.
  • Biskupiak posted two hits, including a double, and the game-winning RBI along with Edwards adding a hit and a run scored.
  • First year Aidan Annello, McGrath, and first year Noah Townsend each registered a hit.
  • Senior Addison Lee took a no-decision after throwing six innings, allowing nine hits, four runs (three earned), no walks and struck out four.
  • Terada-Herzer extended his scoreless innings streak to 9.2 following four scoreless innings, allowing two hits, one walk and struck out four.
  • Roy-Burman earned his second win of the season in relief as he went the final two innings, allowing no hits, one walk and striking out four.
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Caney went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored while Mac Cady recorded two hits, including a double and three stolen bases.
  • McDonald totaled two hits, including a triple, a run scored and a RBI along with Collins knocking in a run.
  • EJ Stefanelli, Jack Riva and Landon Schwartzman each added a hit.
  • Collins collected a no-decision after tossing 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned), three walks and struck out four.
  • Charles Modlin took the loss as he went the final three innings, giving up three hits, one run and struck out four.
Game 2 - Vassar 6 Skidmore 5

How It Happened
  • Vassar opened the scoring in game two in the top of the first inning on a two-RBI single from McGrath to score Edwards and Bergman.
  • The Brewers tacked on two runs in the second inning following a RBI double from Annello and a sacrifice fly from Townsend to go ahead 4-0.
  • Cady's two-run homer in the fourth cut the deficit in half along with Eddie Galvao scoring on an error in the sixth to get the Thoroughbreds within a run.
  • VC answered with two runs in the seventh inning behind a RBI triple from Bergman, who later scored on a fielder's choice, to put the Brewers ahead 6-3.
  • Caney blasted a solo homer in the seventh followed by a RBI single from Galvao to trim the Vassar lead to 6-5.
  • Senior Danny Wellner kept the Throughbreds off the scoreboard in the final two innings to earn the save and the series victory for Vassar.
For The Brewers
  • Bergman posted two hits, including a triple, two runs scored and a RBI along with McGrath knocking in two runs with two hits.
  • Fox-Fernandez added two hits and a RBI while Townsend and Annello both had a double, a run scored and a run batted in.
  • Edwards and first year Jack Johnson each tallied a hit and a run scored while first year Nick Kreatsoulas chipped in a hit.
  • Junior Will Darrell earned his fifth victory of the season, giving him 12 for his career which is fourth all-time in Vassar history, after throwing 6.1 innings and giving up six hits, five runs (four earned), two walks and struck out five.
  • Wellner picked up his first save of the season following 2.1 scoreless innings of relief and allowing two hits, one walk and struck out one.
For The Thoroughbreds
  • Cady tallied two hits, including a homer, two RBI and a run scored while Galvao recorded two hits, a run scored and a run batted in.
  • Caney added a homer along with Nate Vandersea posting a hit and a run scored.
  • McDonald and Riva each added a hit.
  • Chase Siegel took the loss as he went six innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two walks and struck out four.
  • Nick Palovich tossed 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and striking out four.
