Canton, NY - The Vassar College Baseball team swept a crossover Liberty League doubleheader against St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers staged a late comeback to defeat the Saints, 8-7, in game one before taking the nightcap, 4-2, to complete the sweep.
Vassar's record improves to 9-14 overall and 5-6 in conference action while St. Lawrence drops to 11-10 on the season and 5-5 in league play.
Game 1 - Vassar 8 SLU 7
How It Happened
- St. Lawrence scored first in the bottom half of the first inning following Nolan Widrick RBI double that knocked in Jack Finnegan, who reached on a leadoff single, a two-run homer from John Gannon and a solo shot from John Donnellan to put the Saints ahead 4-0.
- Junior Noah Stockman's RBI single drove in first year Eric Wallick, who lead the inning off with a single, to cut the deficit to 4-1 in the second.
- The Saints answered with two runs in the bottom half of the second on two-out RBI singles from Widrick and Gannon.
- SLU added a run in the third as Donnellan scored on a double play to put the Saints up 7-2.
- VC countered with a five-spot in the fourth inning as Stockman knocked in a run with a single, senior Jensen Bergman cleared the bases with a three-RBI triple to right center and then scored on a sacrifice fly from first year Ethan Fox-Fernandez to get the Brewers within 7-6.
- Vassar completed the comeback in the top of the ninth as Bergman led off with a double and then Fox-Fernandez singled on a bunt to put runners on the corners.
- After SLU's Joe Laprade kept the Brewers off the board with two outs, first year Jack Biskupiak was hit by a pitch and Stockman drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game at seven.
- The Brewers pushed the game-winning run across on a wild pitch before senior Cade Terada-Herzer retired the side in order in the ninth to clinch the 8-7 victory.
For The Brewers
- Bergman went 2-for-5 with three RBI, a run scored, a double, a triple and a stolen base while Stockman tallied three hits, including a double, and drove in three runs.
- Wallick notched a three-hit game with a run scored along with first year Nick Kreatsoulas, Fox-Fernandez, first year Noah Townsend and Biskupiak all adding a hit and a run scored.
- Junior Grant Maryott started and took the no-decision on the mound as he went six innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned).
- Terada-Herzer earned his first victory of the season in relief as he tossed three scoreless innings.
For The Saints
- Gannon recorded three hits, including a homer and a double, and drove in three runs while Widrick tallied two hits, including a double, two runs scored and two RBI.
- Donnellan posted two hits (solo homer), two runs scored and a RBI while Ethan Harris and Finnegan each registered a hit.
- David Zuhlsdorf took a no-decision after he went the first four innings, giving up eight hits, six runs, two walks and struck out two.
- Laprade suffered the loss as he threw five innings, allowing six hits, two runs, one walk and struck out eight.
Game 2 - Vassar 4 SLU 2
How It Happened
- SLU scratched out a run in the bottom of the second on a RBI single from Mike Siano to take a 1-0 lead.
- Vassar took its first lead of the game on first year Jack Johnson's three-run homer, his third home run of the season, to go ahead 3-1 in the fourth.
- The Saints reduced the deficit to 3-2 in the fifth on a RBI single from Gannon.
- VC added an insurance run in the top of ninth on a RBI single from Kreatsoulas to expand the final lead to 4-2.
For The Brewers
- Junior Will Darrell earned the win as he went six innings, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), four walks and struck out two.
- Junior Patrick Mill tossed a scoreless seventh inning and classmate Sage Roy-Burman picked up the save following two hitless innings and striking out four.
- Kreatsoulas tallied two hits and drove in a run while Fox-Fernandez notched two hits and a run scored.
- Johnson blasted his third career homer and knocked in three runs along with Bergman and sophomore Dash Edwards each recording a hit.
For The Saints
- Siano and Gannon each registered two hits and a run batted in while Widrick and Eoin Morrissey tallied a hit apiece.
- Liam Hickey took the loss as he went four innings, giving up four hits, three runs, one walk and struck out one.
- Joshua Polumbo tossed three scoreless innings of relief.
