Poughkeepsie, NY - The #T-20 Vassar College Men's Volleyball team saw its six-match winning streak come to an end on Wednesday evening as the Brewers fell in a five-set battle with #9 NYU 25-15, 25-20, 23-25, 19-25, 9-15 in the UVC regular season finale.
Vassar drops to 15-9 overall and 3-4 in UVC play, which gives the Brewers the fifth-seed in the upcoming UVC Championship and matches VC up with fourth-seeded Hobart next Friday. NYU improves to 18-5 on the season and 5-2 in conference play to earn the third seed in the conference tournament and will take on sixth-seeded St. John Fisher.
First Set
- Vassar raced out to a 7-3 lead behind a kill each from junior Parker Schoenl, sophomore Shawn Zheng and junior Armaan Desai along with a block from Desai, Zheng and first year Darwin Davis.
- NYU drew back within 11-10 behind three kills from Veer Agarwal and an ace and a winner from Emerson Evans.
- Kills from Davis and Desai along with a solo block from Desai expanded the lead to 14-11.
- The Violets cut back within 15-14 on a kill from Jerry Feng until the Brewers rattled off 10 of the final 11 points to take the opening set.
- VC used a kill and an ace from Schoenl, a winner and a solo block from senior James Zuckerman and blocks from Zheng, Zuckerman and junior Walter Birnbaum to take the 25-15 set win.
Second Set
- Neither team pulled ahead by more than a point until a three-point run from the Violets, led by a kill each from Evans and Cade Miller, gave NYU a 11-8 lead.
- VC tied the set at 12 on a Birnbaum kill before NYU pulled back ahead 14-12.
- The Brewers answered with four straight points as Birnbaum buried three winners and Zuckerman tallied a kill.
- Charlie Clifford's kill drew the Violets within one at 17-16 until the lead grew to 21-17 for Vassar on a solo block from Desai and a winner from Zheng.
- Two kills from Miller cut the deficit to 22-20 until Vassar took the final three points of the set, led by a block from Zuckerman and Schoenl and an ace from Desai, to take a 2-0 set lead.
Third Set
- NYU collected a 4-2 lead to begin the third set until two Desai winners helped push VC ahead 5-4.
- Neither team created any separation until NYU pulled ahead 19-16 after back-to-back kills from Devyn Nguyen and Evans.
- Vassar evened the set at 19 all behind a kill each from Desai and Davis followed a block from the duo.
- Consecutive kills from Clifford pushed NYU ahead 21-19 until the Brewers collected kills from Desai, Birnbaum and Zuckerman to gain a 23-22 advantage.
- The Violets took the final three points of the set on a kill from Evans and a block from Agarwal and Evans to extend the match to a fourth set.
Fourth Set
- NYU scored a 6-4 lead on a block from Evans and Miller before Vassar answered with an 8-6 lead on a solo block from Birnbaum and an ace from Desai.
- Following a Davis kill kill to take a 11-9 lead, NYU tallied a kill and a block from Evans, a winner from Clifford and a block from Nguyen to gain a 13-12 advantage.
- The Brewers regained the lead at 16-15 on two Desai kills and a Birnbaum winner and then the set was evened at 19 on a NYU service error.
- NYU rallied for the final six points of the set, led by two Evans kills, to push the match to the deciding fifth set.
Fifth Set
- The Violets took the first three points of the final set, capped by a Clifford winner.
- VC answered with the next three points as Desai buried two winners.
- NYU pulled ahead 7-4 after two errors until the Brewers collected back-to-back points on a Desai winner and a NYU error to get within one.
- The Violets scored seven of the next eight points, led by two kills from Evans, a solo block from Miller and an ace from Jeremy Li, to take a 14-7 lead.
- Vassar got within 14-9 after a Zuckerman kill but a Clifford kill completed the reverse sweep for the Violets.
For The Brewers
- Desai finished with a career-high 20 kills (.690), two aces and four blocks (two solo) while Birnbaum recorded 19 kills, three blocks (two solo) and six digs.
- Zuckerman tallied seven kills and five blocks (one solo) along with Zheng posting three kills, three blocks and 11 digs.
- Davis chipped in six kills, an ace, three blocks and seven digs while senior Casey McMenamin matched his career-high in digs with 18.
- Schoenl garnered two kills, 44 assists, an ace, two blocks (one solo) and seven digs.
For The Violets
- Evans registered a match-high 21 kills, three blocks (one solo) and 14 digs while Clifford posted 15 kills, an ace, two blocks and 10 digs.
- Miller totaled seven kills, three blocks (one solo) and two digs along with Agarwal added six kills and three blocks.
- Nguyen recorded 44 assists, a solo block and 13 digs while Feng chipped in four kills and four digs.
- Bennet Tchaikovsky lifted eight digs and added seven assists.

- Vassar hosts its Senior Day tri-match on Saturday against #3 Stevens and Elizabethtown with the first match beginning at 1:00 p.m.
- NYU is off until the First Round of the UVC Championship where they will take on sixth-seeded St. John Fisher on Friday, April 10 at New Paltz.
