#T-20 Men's Volleyball Upends #3 Stevens, Elizabethtown on Senior Day

Brewers finish regular season with a 17-9 overall record, heads to UVC Championship on Friday

Poughkeepsie, NY - The #T-20 Vassar College Men's Volleyball celebrated its seniors in the final home tri-match of the season on Saturday as the Brewers took down #3 Stevens 25-18, 26-24, 22-25, 25-17 followed by a 25-21, 25-16, 21-25, 25-12 triumph over Elizabethtown in the nigthtcap.

Vassar's record improves to 17-9 overall after celebrating its senior class of Casey McMenamin, Doug Chandler, Cannon Tucker and James Zuckerman.
 

Vassar 3 Stevens 1

First Set
  • Vassar surged out to a 6-2 lead behind two kills each from first year Darwin Davis and junior Armaan Desai along with a winner from junior Henry Bonney.
  • Stevens battled back to even the set at nine following two winners from Joshua Levandoske and a kill from Julius Stiemer.
  • The Brewers rattled off six straight points on two Desai kills, a winner from Bonney, a solo block from Davis and an ace from Zuckerman.
  • The Ducks trimmed the deficit to 16-14 on a kill and two aces from Stiemer before the Brewers lead grew to 23-16 on a block from Zuckerman and junior Walter Birnbaum.
  • Alex Olcott buried two kills to get within 24-18 until a Davis kill clinched the opening set for Vassar.
Second Set
  • Stevens scored an early 5-3 lead after two kills from Ryan Schmid before a solo block from Zuckerman trimmed the lead to one.
  • The Ducks expanded the lead to 11-6 behind three Stiemer kills, a winner from Holcott and a block from Quinn Bozarth and Tyler Hoke.
  • Vassar battled back to get within 11-10 on a winner each from Zuckerman and Desai and blocks from Desai, Bonney and Davis.
  • After an Olcott kill put the Ducks ahead 15-12, Vassar scored the next five points to take a 17-15 lead on a Zuckerman kill.
  • Stevens evened the set at 22 on a kill from Schmid and then collected two kills from Olcott to knot the set at 24.
  • Vassar used a Stevens service error and an ace from junior Parker Schoenl to collect the second set victory.
Third Set
  • Both teams traded points early as the Ducks pulled ahead 10-7 on a block from Stiemer, Bozarth and Esteban Schmitt.
  • Vassar drew within 12-10 on a Bonney kill before Stevens' lead moved to 14-10 on a kill from Phillip Bone.
  • The Brewers whittled the lead to 16-15 until three straight points from the Ducks increased the advantage to 19-15.
  • Vassar used a kill from Davis to help get back within a point at 20-19 and got it within one again at 22-21 on a Desai kill.
  • Stevens scored three of the final four points as an Olcott winner pushed the match to the fourth set.
Fourth Set
  • Vassar secured a 6-2 lead to begin the fourth set as Davis buried two kills and first year Kaden Chen landed an ace.
  • Stevens knotted the set at eight apiece after an Olcott kill and a block from Bozarth and Schmitt until Vassar grew its lead to 14-9 on two kills from sophomore Stuart Dow and a kill from Bonney.
  • VC expanded the lead to 19-12 on kills from Desai and Birnbaum along with an ace from Davis.
  • Stevens got within 21-15 on a block from Bozarth and Schmit but Vassar used kills from Bonney and Dow along with an ace from Birnbaum and a block from Bonney and Dow to complete the upset victory.
For The Brewers
  • Bonney garnered 17 kills, six blocks (one solo) and six digs while Birnbaum recorded 13 kills, an ace, three blocks and nine digs.
  • Desai posted 13 kills (.370) and seven blocks (two solo) along with Davis registering eight kills, an ace, six blocks (three solo) and nine digs.
  • Zuckerman chipped in three kills, an ace and five blocks (one solo) while Dow totaled three kills and two blocks.
  • Schoenl, who reached the 1,000 career assist plateau in the first set, finished with 43 assists, three blocks, an ace and 12 digs.
  • McMenamin lifted a team-high 16 digs.
For The Ducks
  • Stiemer finished with 19 kills, two aces, a block and 11 digs while Olcott garnered 14 kills, an ace, two blocks and six digs.
  • Schmid tallied 11 kills and 17 digs along with Hoke adding two kills and three blocks.
  • Bozarth posted two kills, 42 assists, four blocks and nine digs.

Vassar 3 Elizabethtown 1

First Set
  • Vassar soared out to a 9-2 lead behind an ace from junior Enzo Bertini and a kill each from Birnbaum, Chandler and sophomore Petar Miocinovic.
  • The lead expanded to 14-6 on two kills from Zuckerman and a kill each from Bertini and Chandler.
  • Elizabethtown cut the lead to 20-15 on a block from Mason Boyer, Declan Keller and Josh McCoy.
  • A solo block and a kill from Miocinovic pushed the advantage to 22-15 until the Blue Jays got within four on kills from Keller and Reid Maas.
  • Winners from sophomore Shawn Zheng and Birnabaum led the Brewers to the first set win.
Second Set
  • VC scored a 7-3 lead in the second set, led by a kill each from Miocinovic, Zuckerman, Chandler and Birnbaum and an ace from Miocinovic.
  • Kills from Boyer and McCoy cut the lead to 11-10 until a big Brewers run gave Vassar a 18-11 lead after kills from Miocinovic and Schoenl.
  • The Brewers pushed the lead to 23-13 on kills from Chandler, Zuckerman and Birnbaum.
  • Etown got within 24-16 on a kill and an ace from Maas but Bertini's kill gave Vassar a 2-0 lead.
Third Set
  • After a McCoy kill put the Blue Jays ahead 4-2, Vassar rallied to go ahead 8-5 on two Birnbaum kills and a winner each from Miocinovic, Schoenl and Zheng.
  • Elizabethtown trimmed the lead to 12-11 on a kill from Hugh Rogers until VC pushed the lead to 19-16 on a Miocinovic kill.
  • Following a winner from Schoenl to push the lead to 21-18, the Blue Jays rattled off the final seven points of the set to push the match to a fourth set.
  • Elizabethtown was led by a kill each from Indi Singh, Samuel Ulrich and Killer along with an ace from Rogers and blocks from Keller, Singh and Ulrich.
Fourth Set
  • Following a 5-5 tie to start the fourth set, Vassar scored four straight to take a 9-5 lead behind a kill each from Schoenl and Zheng along with a solo block from Birnbaum.
  • The lead ballooned to 14-6 on three kills from Zheng and one kill from Zuckerman.
  • Vassar added to its lead to make it 20-8 on two more winners from Miocinovic, a kill and an ace from Zheng and a winner from Birnbaum.
  • The Brewers took the fourth set after a kill from Zheng and a winner and an ace from Davis.
For The Brewers
  • Miocinovic tallied 12 kills two aces, nine digs and a solo block along with Birnbaum recording 10 kills, seven assists, a solo block and five digs.
  • Zheng totaled nine kills, an ace and five digs while Zuckerman added seven kills, an ace and a solo block.
  • Schonel posted a career-high seven kills, 33 assists and six digs while Chandler chipped in five kills.
  • Bertini finished with three kills, an ace and seven digs while McMenamin lifted 10 digs.
For The Blue Jays
  • Maas garnered 14 kills and three digs while Keller added six kills, three blocks and six digs.
  • Ulrich added five kills and a solo block along with McCoy secured three kills, five blocks and two digs.
  • Rogers finished with three kills, 20 digs, an ace, a solo block and four digs.
  • Boyer posted three kills and three blocks.
Up Next
  • Vassar will begin the UVC Championship on Friday evening with a First Round matchup against Hobart at 5:00 p.m at SUNY New Paltz.
