Men’s Lacrosse Dealt Road Loss At #17/16 Wesleyan

Geoghagan makes 30 saves in goal

Middletown, CT – The Vassar College Men's Lacrosse team returned to the road Wednesday afternoon and dropped a 19-11 decision at #17/16 Wesleyan. First Year goalie Jess Geoghagan (Mercer Island, WA) finished the game with 30 saves in goal for the Brewers.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Vassar to 1-2 through the season's first three games with the Cardinals evening their record at 1-1.
 
How It Happened
  • Wesleyan scored the first four goals of the game inside the first half of the opening quarter, getting a pair of goals from James Bailey.
  • Vassar got on the board at the 5:07 mark of the opening frame when Tate Tinker (Lexington, KY) finished off a feed from Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY).
  • The Cardinals came back with another four-goal run to spread their lead to 8-1 on a Gavin Lechner tally with just under seven minutes left before halftime.
  • The Brewers scored two of the next three goals, getting markers from Nate Johnson (Franklin, TN) and Anderson Eads (Brightwaters, NY), to climb to within 9-3.
  • Wesleyan finished the opening 30 minutes with two of the final three goals to carry an 11-3 lead into the intermission.
  • Wesleyan outshot Vassar 42-11 over the first half and held a 26-18 edge in groundballs.
  • Vassar won 10 of the 17 first half face-offs.
  • The Cardinals outscored Vassar 4-1 in the third frame with John Malone (Devon, PA) registering the Brewers' goal at the 6:41 mark of the quarter.
  • The Brewers outscored Wesleyan in the fourth frame 6-4, tallying five of the final seven goals.
  • Arcuri scored the final goal of the game and added an assist on a Liam McGuire (Rochester, NY) marker with 11:33 left in the tilt.

For The Brewers
  • Geoghagan had a busy collegiate debut, turning aside 30 shots on the day. Geoghagan posts just the third 30-save performance for Vassar since 2005 when Will Widen made 37 saves against RPI and 33 saves against Clarkson. Georghagan added three groundballs in the game for Vassar.
  • Eads and Arcuri led the offensive attack for Vassar with three points apiece.
  • Eads posted his third multiple goal game to start the season, scoring twice and adding an assist.
  • Aruri scored once and assisted on two goals to go along with a groundball and a caused turnover.
  • Johnson, Malone and Travis Heller (Lafayette, NJ) each scored two goals.
  • Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) assisted on two goals for the Brewers.
  • Danny Holt (Rochester, MI) went 14-for-25 in face-offs on Wednesday and collected nine groundballs.
  • Tim Morin (Stow, MA) forced three turnovers and picked up three groundballs.
  • Dan Bader (Forestdale, MA) collected five groundballs and caused two turnovers.
  • Kyriakos Ciccone (Southborough, MA) caused two miscues and secured four groundballs for the Brewers.
 
For The Cardinals
  • Lechner led the Cardinals with seven points, scoring four goals and helping on three others. Lechner finished a big day with seven groundballs.
  • Thomas Girimonti finished with three goals and a pair of assists.
  • Bailey and Charlie Knapp both scored three goals.
  • Will Miller assisted on three tallies and scored a goal of his own.
  • Joe Hurton caused a game-high six turnovers and collected five groundballs.
  • Jackson Tinari and Jack Stanislaw both won seven face-offs and secured five groundballs.
  • Conor Selfridge earned the win in goal with seven saves in 45 minutes of action.
  • Silas Hamblett turned aside three shots in 15 minutes worth of work.

  • Wesleyan finished with a convincing 75-32 advantage in shots, including a 49-21 edge in shots on goal.
  • Wesleyan held a slim 17-16 advantage in face-offs.
