Women’s Lacrosse Drops Road Contest At #8 William Smith

Trio of Brewers record two points, Busam makes 10 saves

Geneva, NY – The Vassar College Women's Lacrosse team took to the road on Saturday and suffered a 19-6 loss at #8 William Smith. Elizabeth Burgess (Columbus, OH) scored twice and was one of three Brewers to record two points in the contest.
 
Vassar suffers its third straight defeat to open conference play and stands at 5-3 overall and 0-3 against Liberty League rivals. William Smith improves to 8-1 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • A back-and-forth first quarter saw Vassar pull in front 3-2 on Tess Billings' (Deerfield, IL) 28th goal of the season with 8:49 left in the opening stanza.
  • The Herons came back with the three of the final four markers of the first quarter, including player-up goals from Delaney Cassidy and Cat Colvin, to grab the lead for good in the game and carry a 5-4 advantage into the second period.
  • William Smith outscored Vassar 4-1 heading into halftime, getting three tallies from Taryn Luzi, to grab a 9-5 advantage at the intermission.
  • Amelia Poirier (Atherton, CA) scored the Brewers' lone goal of the second frame, finishing an unassisted goal 1:14 into the quarter.
  • The Herons outshot Vassar 28-11 covering the first two quarters and doubled up the Brewers in draw controls, 10-5.
  • Coming out of halftime, William Smith erupted for eight third quarter goals to surge in front 17-6 heading to the final frame.
  • The Herons scored the first six goals of the quarter before Burgess stopped the run off a feed from Billings at the 4:33 mark of the quarter.
  • William Smith accounted for the only two goals of the final frame, including Colvin's third of the game to close out the scoring in the contest.
  • Shots in the second half went to the William Smith 20-2 with the Herons holding a 7-5 edge in draw controls after the break.
 
For The Brewers
  • Burgess scored twice in the game for Vassar, giving her seven on the season.
  • Billings scored once and assisted on a goal and moved to within a pair of tallies of 100 in her career. Billings closed out the contest matching the team-high with four draw controls while adding a pair of groundballs.
  • Maddie Kaltsas (Minnetrista, MN) finished with a goal and a helper and joined Billings in the game with a team-high four draw controls.
  • Maddie Busam (Summit, NJ) reached double-figures in saves for the third time this season, turning aside 10 shots and collecting two groundballs.
 
For The Herons
  • Luzi potted six goals in the game for William Smith and secured three groundballs.
  • Colvin and Lauren Collins each scored three times with Colvin adding an assist and a groundball.
  • Cassidy and Mia Falco both finished with two goals and two assists for the Herons.
  • Ally Orquiloa won a game-high seven draw controls and forced two turnovers.
  • Katie Grottenhaler finished with five draw controls and a groundball.
  • Casey Fiore earned the win in goal for William Smith with five saves.
