Brewers Battle Past Clarkson, 10-9

Arcuri reaches 100 career points

Poughkeepsie, NY – Junior Gavin Arcuri (Westhampton, NY) totaled five points, including the 100th of his career, and senior Anderson Eads (Brightwaters, NY) scored what proved to be the game winning goal with 1:06 left in the contest as Vassar battled past Clarkson 10-9 Saturday afternoon. First Year netminder Jess Geoghagan (Mercer Island, NY) backstopped the Brewers to the win with 20 saves in goal.
 
Vassar scores its second straight one-goal victory over Clarkson and improves to 5-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in Liberty League play. The Golden Knights slip to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
 
How It Happened
  • Clarkson ran out to a quick 4-0 lead inside the first six minutes of the contest.
  • Vassar would get on the board with a Hayden Sofield (Long Beach, NY) marker at the 8:36 of the opening period to stop the Clarkson run.
  • The Golden Knights spread their lead to 5-1 on an Ethan Hopkins tally with 5:49 left in the quarter with what proved to be their final goal until early in the second frame.
  • Vassar closed the first quarter with goals from Arcuri and Drew Mazzocco (Leesburg, VA) inside the final 3:03 of the quarter to pull to within 5-3 heading to the second frame.
  • Vassar and Clarkson each scored once heading into halftime, with Tate Tinker (Lexington, KY) scoring with 7:17 left in the half to pull Vassar to with 6-5 at the break.
  • Clarkson outshot Vassar 27-14 in the first half and dominated face-offs 11-2.
  • Geoghagan held Vassar to within a goal after making 14 first half stops.
  • Vassar stifled Clarkson in the third quarter, allowing just a single goal.
  • The Brewers grabbed their first lead of the game with 4:27 left in the period when Tinker potted a feed from Mazzocco to move Vassar in front 7-6.
  • Connor Holly knotted the score with just under three minutes left in the period before Tarvis Heller (Lafayette, NJ) buried a goal with 12 seconds left in the frame to send Vassar to the final 15 minutes with an 8-7 advantage.
  • Ian Erskine brought Clarkson even at 8-8 early in the fourth quarter before Arcuri and Eads scored back-to-back goals in the final five minutes to push Vassar in front for good in the game.
  • Clarkson got a Holly marker in the closing seconds to pull to within a shot, but was unable to find the equalizer.
  • Clarkson held a 14-13 advantage in shots after halftime and a 6-4 edge in face-offs.

  • Arcuri reaches the 100-point mark after scoring three times and assisting on two other goals. Arcuri finishes the game with 102 career points and added two groundballs for the Brewers.

  • Mazzocco also finished with a goal and a helper for the Brewers.
