#RV Men's Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Five in Sweep of Nazareth

Brewers improve to 14-8 overall, 2-3 in conference play

Rochester, NY - The #RV Vassar College Men's Volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches on Friday evening as the Brewers earned its five straight set win in a 25-23, 25-22, 25-18 triumph over conference foe Nazareth.

Vassar improves to 14-8 overall and 2-3 in UVC contests while the Golden Flyers drop to 12-13 on the season and 1-5 in league play.

First Set
  • Vassar pulled ahead 6-4 following back-to-back kills from juniors Walter Birnbaum and Armaan Desai before Nazareth drew even at six on a block from Quinn Ringstad and Sean Frawley.
  • Neither team pulled ahead by more than two until the Brewers went on a four-point run, led by kills from junior Parker Schoenl, senior James Zuckerman and Birnbaum to take a 18-14 lead.
  • Nazareth pulled within 20-19 on a kill and an ace from Frawley along with a kill from Ryan Murphy.
  • Vassar went ahead 24-21 on kills from sophomores Shawn Zheng and Petar Miocinovic and a block from Birnbaum and Zuckerman.
  • The Golden Flyers cut the deficit down to 24-23 after a Joe Seliger kill until Desai's winner clinched the opening-set victory for the Brewers.
Second Set
  • Two kills from sophomore Henry Bonney, three winners from Birnbaum and a kill from Miocinovic collected an 8-4 lead for Vassar to begin the second set.
  • Nazareth responded with a six-point run to take a 10-8 lead on a two aces from Frawley and blocks from Quintin Chiles and Murphy.
  • VC drew back even at 13 behind three winners from Bonney and a kill each from Desai and first year Darwin Davis.
  • The Brewers rattled off four straight points to gain a 19-15 advantage behind a kill from Bonney, a block from Bonney and Zuckerman and an ace from Davis.
  • A four-point run from the Golden Flyers cut the deficit to 23-21 on kills from AJ Burda and Chiles along with a block from Austin Drews.
  • Vassar responded with kills from Bonney and Birnbaum to win the second set 25-22.
Third Set
  • Vassar opened the third set with a 4-1 lead after aces from Zuckerman and Zheng and a winner from Bonney.
  • The lead grew to 8-3 behind kills from Miocinovic, Schoenl and Birnbaum along with a block from Zuckerman and Schoenl.
  • Murphy's winner brought Nazareth within 13-7 before a three-point run following blocks from Miocinovic and Zuckerman expanded the lead to 16-7.
  • Winners from Ringstad and Seliger brought the Golden Flyers within six until the Brewers used an ace from Miocinovic, a kill from Desai and blocks from Birnbaum and Desai to increase the advantage to 22-12.
  • The Golden Flyers trimmed the lead to 22-17 on a Burda kill until two Birnbaum kills completed the fifth straight sweep for the Brewers.
For The Brewers
  • Birnbaum tallied 12 kills, four blocks and eight digs while Bonney posted 11 kills (.526) and three blocks.
  • Miocinovic recorded six kills, five assists, an ace, two blocks and six digs along with Desai registering five kills and three blocks.
  • Zuckerman totaled three kills, an ace, three digs and a career-high seven blocks while senior Casey McMenamin lifted eight digs.
  • Schoenl completed an all-around night with three kills, 33 assists, a block and six digs.
For The Golden Flyers
  • Murphy totaled nine kills, an ace and three digs while Frawley recorded six kills, three aces, a block and six digs.
  • Ringstad tallied four kills, two aces and two digs along with Chiles finishing with four kills, two blocks and five digs.
  • Seliger posted three kills and four digs while Burda registered two kills, 21 assists, two blocks and six digs.
